Years of fascinating reading here, including how to make your own piston rings!

I remember, Peter, when I was very young at the latter end of the war, watching my Dad turning piston rings from a grey cast-iron pipe off the scrap heap. Using an ancient line-driven lathe.
The car gave years of service after that on private hire until sold.
I've never tried to replicate it and doubt whether I could. And certainly not with the equipment he had available.
Jim.

Proper engineering Jim! Great stuff. Do you still have his lathe?

Peter

No Peter, but it may give you some idea of the age when I tell you that the lathe was gratefully collected by Sheffield Industrial Museum when the premises were demolished in 1982. They also took a pillar drill with a 4ft (approx) side flywheel with a handle on the priphery to wind it and a similar horizontal flywheel on the top. That may be where my early teenage muscles came from!

Hi Jim,

Not quite in the same league, but I have a little bench drill that belonged to my father. It has a crank handle on the side and a flywheel on the top and feeds automatically. Quite clever.

I guess your's was a much bigger version of the one in this photo:

P.

Rather bigger Peter. Floorstanding, about 7ft high and would take drill bits over 1 inch diameter. The cast flywheel and winding wheel were rather beautiful, having "S" shaped spokes which suggested action.
We did also have a small bench pillar drill driven by the line-shaft, but we did not use that much.
The lathe was also driven by the line-shaft (along with grind-stones and buffing wheels etc.), but I think it may have originated as a treadle machine.
Jim.
PS useful looking workshop you have there, with many signs of home adaptation.

Must have seen it and forgotten. Visited Brooklands on the way back from the Romahome IOW Rally late last year.
Oh, the advantages of old age! Embarassed
