Good evening all. It was that time again, and typically the old green not-very-mean machine had been playing up We broke down four times on the way back from The Butty Run last weekend ( A weird and wonderful meeting where anything goes, old/new/kits/cosha etc). I`ve mentioned before that the fuel evaporation problem in the pump has been an issue with Bertie, and is a well known fault. I fitted an electric pump a while ago and have had no running problems until recently, but discovered that whenever he broke down the electric pump was the reason. A good clout got it going again but one cannot keep stopping in front of a long queue of irritated drivers waving cheerfully saying sorry chaps, wont be a mo for ever ! I talked to the owner of Katie ( a truly lovely `56 pop, lovingly renovated with no expense spared) and he suggested it may be the way i had plumbed the electric pump in,as the diaphragm of the mechanical pump may now be disintegrating. So, on friday evening, the day before the MoT, Judy (Angie baby on this site) and I went over to Bertie, removed the pump and went to see Colin, Katie`s owner. He not only had a spare pump but had put a recent diaphragm in it....so I/we fitted it, primed it and fired Bertie up. He went fine, and am pleased to say has done so ever since Anyway, The MoT..
P A T, I`ve used this place for as long as I can remember. They are fair, friendly and take fair wear and tear in to consideration as well...and that`s Angie baby in the picture
Typically, we`ve had weeks of dry weather, and saturday was....WET!!
Jeff`s memory, the owner and tester on the day, and expertise goes back many years and used to race Anglia`s in the 60`s, and is well versed with the "oldies", so Bertie`s rod and cable brakes were nothing new to him as were all the typical faults on older cars..
He asked me to sit in and work the "controls", ie lights/indicators/horn/wiper/washer etc with a smile, then up in the air..
the front was raised first, where the trunnions ( slight lift in the nearside), wheel bearings, tyres, chassis, linkages, exhaust condition and mounting were checked..Then the back, wheel bearings, spring mountings and condition, tyres etc all checked....and ok
The following links are to videos taken by Judy of the MoT, I hope they work..

...and that was it. He had passed with flying colours So after we were presented with his MoT, We drove back to where he`s garaged, and I parked him once more..

Well, the next time we go out in the old beast will be tuesday, where the local Ford sidevalve club meet up at the Queen`s Head in Meriden....and I`ll be buying Katie`s owner Colin a drink Thanks for staying awake, take care....
