|
|
Hello
A friend of mine has a 1936 Morris 8 4 seat tourer with a 3 speed box and has just bought a four speed box from a series E. I seem to recall that this was a commonish conversion years ago, but I cannot find anything on the internet about it. Rather than trying to "reinvent the wheel" I wondered if anyone on the forum had any experience or advice and tips.
He wants me to help him, but as he is older than his car, I may be doing most of the work!
Thanks _________________ North Essex,UK - Morris 8 tourer 1936 - Jaguar x350 |

Hi
Yep its still a popular conversion, if your mate is in the Morris Register, there is an email forum, where this topic is often raised and advice give.
Basically there are 2 challenges; firstly the rear gearbox mounting is different, I recall that Austin 1100/1300 subframe mountings provide a suitable fix. Secondly the input shaft is shorter on the 3 speed box; on the 3 speed box the shaft is supported by a bearing in the flywheel, on the 4 speed its a plain bush in the end of the crank, its a simple job of removing the bearing in the flywheel and tapping an oilite bush into the crank.
Hope this helps

Thanks, that is indeed very helpful. I have looked at the Morris register forum and can find no details of this swap at all in the members area?
Perhaps I am doing something wrong? - The morris 8 section only has 80 posts.
Once again many thanks _________________ North Essex,UK - Morris 8 tourer 1936 - Jaguar x350 |

Actually - after more looking - found the past copies of newsletter section - full instructions, and with diagrams - what a really good club website!
I wish all car websites were as good. _________________ North Essex,UK - Morris 8 tourer 1936 - Jaguar x350 |
