Hi all,
I am trying to solder a fine stainless steel mesh into a steel frame for my sump filter but am having problems. The solder / flux is clearly not right and the soldering is not making a good join. Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar or have any ideas regarding types of flux and wire for this application?
Any ideas as usual please.
Many thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,

I don't think you can soft solder to stainless steel. How about brazing? http://www.aluminumrepair.com/hts528.asp

I haven't tried HTS528 but their HTS 2000 is excellent for aluminium.

Hi Tim

To solder two dissimilar metals (e.g. Mild steel & stainless steel) you will need to silver solder them together. I use silver solder from cupalloys with a low melting point. it will depend on how thin your mesh is, as to wether you can use silver solder.

Cheers
Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanks for that. I have ordered silver solder and the appropriate flux from cupalloys. I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers,
Tim
