I have a teaset that was handed down to me by my father and his father before him. I reckon its Japanese and where you drink out of it is gold plated. Its in a box and has been up in the loft for years. What its worth I havent a clue and the Roadshow never comes up here that often.
I also have a comb but its a family "heirloom" _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I expect that it is out of use because you dislike the feeling of gilt! _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Back on track, because I suspect the Chieftain was trying to launch a serious thread here....
I inherited, amongst my late father's effects a paperweight, blue with some Japanese writing on it. Now, dad had always maintained that he was present in the ward room of the ship on which the surrender of the Japanese Navy was accepted. '"There it was on the desk and I liberated it."
For all I know it might have been a quayside souvenir generally sold to sailors but I would rather believe dad's account of things so I am careful not to research it too far.
His ship was definately there at the time, there's some quite strong reference to it on the net.
Anyone else with 'interesting bits & pieces? How does one set about tracing the provenance of something like that? |

I think I have a similar set that my father brought back from Malaya in 1956/7 following the Communist Uprising there. Its black lacquer with dragons on the outside, cups have gold interiors and everything is very light in weight - sound familiar?
I have a room full of things I've picked up at autojumbles and auctions during the last 30 odd years ranging from a car-caravan periscope up to a large radiator decoration known as Speed Nymph. Brass firemans helmets, leather riveted hose, numerous specialised firefighting branches (nozzles) and lots of Victorian and Edwardian books on motor cars.
One day I'm going to empty the boxes I have full of forgotten stuff and get it all on ebay as its hasn't seen the light of day for probably 20 years some of it. |

One of my more interesting "finds", not inherited but found in a s/h book shop, a selection of original BAC design drawings relating to Concorde - large drawings with pencilled notes, prints handed out during its promotional world tour prior to entering passenger service etc. Surprising what turns up in the most unlikely of places.
Best car-boot sale find was probably a '60s print (on card, approx A4 size) of Jim Clark sat in a Lotus, with what could be a personal note from him scribbled on the back.
A charity shop turned up a large, very heavy, aluminium promotional model of a Gloster Javelin produced by the factory for use at air shows such as Farnborough etc.
