I have stipped down my e93a engine and need to remove the timing chain to get the crank out. Does the timing chain have a joining link in it ? Or does it only come off by removing the crank sprocket?

Just spoke to my mate with a ford pop
He says there is a sprung loaded tensioner.
Free that off and you should be able to remove the chain

Just been checking the 103e engine diagram and can't see any mention of a tensioner though they are on the 105 engine. |

Hi Jason,
No there's no tensioner, but this is straight from the Workshop Manual:
(I have omitted the first few stages ie: removing cover etc)
TO REMOVE THE TIMING CHAIN
5) Turn the engine until the centre of the camshaft, the centre of the crankshaft and the marked teeth on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are all in one and the same straight line.
6) Remove the locking wire and unscrew the three screws holding the sprocket to the camshaft, when it may be moved forward, together with the timing chain which can then be slipped off the crankshaft sprocket.
Hope this helps....a workshop manual is extremely helpful and well worth buying if you intend on DIY.

P.s the original chains don't have a removable link but I think most of the new ones do.
The new one I fitted to my Pop some years back had a 'detachable link' ...if I remember rightly you could remove links to get the right tension...like you would do a watch strap!.....my memory may be playing tricks though |

Sorry about the mis information
Your right no tensioner,
I got that info from my mate of the phone.
Recon he must have been half asleep as he has three spare e93a 10hp engines for his Pop, all rebuilt in his workshop.
And he has most of the workshop manuals.
I'll take him up on this next time I see him.

Greg/Roger Thanks for your help, yes a manual is a good idea I had the same thought a few days ago after I realised what had started out as a tidy up and reco of engine parts has turned into a full overhaul and respray!

Look for posts from Prefect01 he is in Oz and seems to have a lot of local Ford SV contacts. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.
