Hello all,
I am now getting round to thinking about a starter motor for the Hillman. The stock starer is a Lucas M418A which is, I am sure a 6volt item. I am making this car a 12v job.
Can anyone advise me on this please, i.e. will the later M418G go straight on in its place?
Any advice would be welcome
Thanks

You don't really need to change it. 6V starters generally work just fine on 12V - just be sure the starter & earth cables on the battery are heavy gauge.

6 volt starter will cope OK

The DLM has been, as far as I know, 12 Volt all it's life, 1959, it was 12 volt when I found it in 1970.
Still the original 6 Volt starter on the e93a engine.
No problems yet.

Thanks gentlemen for your help.
I have an inherent distrust of electricity - you cant see it!
I will get the old one refurbished and report back later
all the best,
Tim
