Nice quote:

It never ceases to amaze me how the US car manufacturers are able to build such massive engines with such little power and performance, and such high fuel consumption figures. I think they must have some of the smartest minds in the country working for them, because you really have to be trying hard to make that combination.

I reckon 300hp out of a 40 year old 5.7 litre V8 isn't too shoddy - but there then the car still won't go around country road corners to save its life! Laughing

Scotty,

As I recall Chevlolet were getting 300 HP from a 327 cubic inch (5.2 litres) in the 60s.

I've lived in the USA for many years.

I think it's all about "horses for courses".
You wouldn't want to drive a Mini, or a Rover 3500 on a daily basis on the roads around here, never mind 2,000+ miles across country - any more than you'd want to drive a Lincoln Town Car around London, or Somerset.
It is a relatively materialistic society & many US cars are relatively 'flashy', but on the other hand they are built for US driving conditions - largely big, wide, straight & not always terribly smooth roads. The big, lazy, under-stressed engines typically last for 2-300,000 miles with little more than oil changes - there's some merit in that. My 20mpg (US) equates to about 23mpg (UK Imperial) which isn't that that bad for any 4.6l lump. Recent versions of the same lump are closer to 25mpg (US). No diesels in sight, though, which is disappointing.

& I'll just comment that the 'rants & raves' article was written by an angry person. It's to his benefit that he can recognize so many different driving styles (which I see every day of the week) & take necessary precautions, but I still wouldn't want to be within 100 miles of him on the road.
