Does anyone know where I can purchase 1/4" drive BSF sockets, I have a couple, but would like to make up a set of the smaller sizes.
Cheers

I would not think there is much chance Dave. BSF/W was almost extinct before 1/4 drive sockets were thought of. I never even saw a set of 1/4 drive sockets of any kind until well into the 1960s. And then they were A/F.

THe only thing I can think of is the Laser Tools Alldrive kit:

This fits lots of different sizes and has an adaptor to fit your existing 1/4" drive sockets. _________________ 2000 Jaguar XJ8 4.0 LWB

Do you think that is a misprint Peter?
A 1/2 inch Whitworth socket with 1/4 inch drive seems HUGE. Surely the drive would shear off?

Hi Jim... I am only the messenger
Note: nothing much gets past this forum...
but taking in to account where the company is based, then anything is possible.
I presume Dave either found satisfaction somewhere else, or the 1/4 inch drive sheared off launching him across the garage floor and hasn't yet regained use of his typing fingers.... |

Ah yes, I have never come across 1/4 drive Whitworth sockets, but I'll bet yours don't go up to 1/2 inch Whitworth. The torque needed to properly tighten or undo a Whitworth nut that size has got to be more than a 1/4" square drive can handle. 0 BA is much smaller than that and other 1/4" drive socket sets rarely come with bigger than 1/2" AF or 13mm sockets, which is the width (Across Flats) of the nut or bolt, NOT the diameter of the thread.

SEALEY do multispline sockets that fit metric, imperial and torx sizes. They come in 3/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch drive both regular and double depth and with socket rail. The dearest is about 20 quid. I have sold about a dozen various sized sets this week already. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Dave, take a look at your local car boot sale. There's quite a large one fairly near us and it's a good source of cheap, used tools.

The largest 1/4 drive socket I had in whitworth was 7/16 and I'd have thought that it had limited usa as 1/4 drive wouldn't be really strong enough to tighten a nut of that size.
There are some conversion charts on my web site which might help explain whit?BSF/AF and metric sizing and the include the BA sizes as well. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |
