i used the very last bit of my Blarney and talked an old boss into taking me back on as a Counterman, got a friendly crew to work with and decent customers for a change! sure beats the devil out of sitting here biting on my fingernails worrying over the bills! sadly, i had to part with one of my Ford Falcons last month to do that.... ah, well.
still keeping my hand in on my other Falcon, but a lot slower now!

If you go into a nut and bolt store, the counterman will go and find what you want. I go to one and there is about 4 guys behind the counter that will go and fill your order.

A counter is a bench or table between the buyer and seller.

very close; i suppose you chaps would call me a Jobber; i sell auto parts in a retail/wholesale store. you'd recognize me by the telephone handset jammed against my ear, pen gripped firmly in my fist and expression of abject confusion as i try to interpret the needs of the yobbo on the other end of the line!

Having done that exact same job here in the UK between 1983 ~ 2005,
I know exactly where you are coming from (or going back to)

Best wishes with it and remember the customer is always right Wink

errrr.... well; that's what they say, anyway!
we get more than our share of chappies who can no more identify the car they're driving than any given peak of the Himalayas....

still; it's fun to work with the crew i'm in and mostly all of the customers are good eggs. i don't go in feeling apprehensive about the day ahead and i don't clock out feeling drained and exhausted. that, and some wages at the end of the week, make a heck of a difference!

There is always more of a problem if the guy on the phone has had a few beers, burbon's or glasses of wine....

The area I worked in had many local gypsies ~ we called them "do as you likies" ~ and they always got their wives to phone up for parts, so every time you asked for more information (about their Bitsamushi) the wife would yell out into the garden........

Eventually you would ask if she could put him on the phone, and she would say, Oh no luvver, he don't do phones !!!

Happy days
