Rummaging through my re-enactment photos, I found this photo of a lovely Z van that turned up at an event in Leicestershire, looked unrestored but great. There were some other classics but was pre-occupied with the military stuff!

ooo thats great, I've seen a pic of that one somewhere else - can't for the life of me remember where though, possibly in the classic van and pickup mag ages ago. Great to see one that hasn't been tarted up Smile

It would be nice to think that value of vehicles like this would at least equal that of those that are heavily restored and thus be preserved complete with all their life history.

And I do wish they would use vehicles like that in these period dramas or films rather than the immaculately presented ones.

'Back in the day' there was a make do and mend attitude to motoring and most vehicles on the road looked something like this condition wise, programmes that portray those times need to wise up!

Just having another perusal of that Z van photo, it looks like an ex-GPO example (distinctive bonnet catches, extinguisher on the wing), yet 'normal' Z van door handles, instead of the carriage-type that the GPO ones seemed to have when new. Somehow having 6 wheelnuts per wheel seems like overkill on a small 5cwt van to me Smile

Apparently when the GPO sold these vans on, the carriage handles were removed; I have no idea why? there are stories of folk picking the vans up at auctions with the doors tied together with rope Shocked

Hi All,

I've just joined the site after google-ing " Z Vans". I'm currently restoring a 1942 Z Van, ex GPO. Although I bought it as a basket case, I am making progress.

Would anyone have a pic of the engine bay of a Z van that they could mail me, as I'm trying to get the wiring harness back in, and I can't find where the regulator box is fitted. No holes seem to line up, so I'm wondering if it should be fitted to some sort of bracket?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

The electrical spec for vans are different to the civilian vans; civilian vans had the 3rd brush dynamo (shared with the S1/2 Morris 8's) GPO spec vans had the better 2 brush with the RF91or 95 control box, like the Series E had.

Couple of pics below of my ex GPO Z, with a Lucas RF95 control box.
