I just missed this the other day: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=170093017134&rd=1&rd=1

Can anyone advise me on the pitfalls of buying and owning these beautiful motors? Shocked

Hi XL391 (a delta enthusiast I see!)

I did a little write-up on S1-3 XJs on the main site a while back,

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/buyers_guide_xj.htm

Rot is unsurprisingly the big killer of old XJs, although different eras rot in different places - Series 3s for instance like to fall apart around the screens. Look underneath where the trailing arms attach ahead of the rear wheels as all XJS like to rot there. While poking around have a look at the sills and floorpans. At the back look around the fuel filler caps, and have a good poke in the boot, especially under the spare wheel.

Oil pressure is something to watch on 6 cyl cars, and they all need a good antifreeze mix. V12s are very under stressed and seem more robust than the 6 if looked after. The article on the main site goes into this in more detail.

My first XJ was a S1 XJ12L in dark blue, a few years later I had a tatty but quick Daimler XJ6 S1, then finally a swb Jaguar XJ6 S1. Dad has had both 6 cyl and V12 Series 3 too.

So, Vulcans, which one is/was XL391?

Rick

[Update - ah 391 was the one at Blackpool, I thought it rang a bell, what a shame Crying or Very sad )

Thanks Rick! 391 was indeed the much neglected Blackpool bird. Crying or Very sad I have quite a few photos of her in one piece and also being 'removed'. I also have her port engine intake blank which I hid in the bushes next to the pub and went back for under the cover of darkness!! It just about fitted in a Ford Galaxy!! Laughing Off to Bruntingthorpe to see XH558 in the next few weeks before her first flight... Very Happy
