Hi, I have started my first resto project, a 1974 Mini. I have sorted the boot lid, replaced the lip of the bonnet, and rebuilt the bottom of the drivers door.I am about to try changing the front panel. I presume I will need to move the VIN plate on to the new panel, is it ok to drill out the rivets and just re-rivet the plate on to the new one ?
both commission and chassi shall be transferred, but the important plate to move over, are the body no (if still there?)
its a long thin plate, with big reverse stamped digits & letters.
its welded on the front panel, same way as the FE no on the innerwing, by the radiator.
Thanks for your help. I have seen the other plate that you mentioned, it is located on the nearside of the slam panel. There appears to be 2 vin plates, the one that matches the log book held on by 2 rivets, and a second one sharing one of its rivets. I dont know what its for, is that the commission that you mentioned?
so many Mini,s have lost it, when they get restored.
this plate shows what type of car the body is built for.
I would cut the slam panel on each side of it, so you can carefully grind off the spotwelds from the underside, leaving the thin plate untouched.
This way you can spotweld it onto the new frontpanel, and it will look 100% original
You are right, the other Alloy plate, that share the center poprivit, with the chassi plate is the commission plate. _________________ http://www.eurods.eu/wp/index.html
