Took the hunter for its vrt yesterday which it passed, so that means another 2 years on the road!!
Now its got that, the engine rebuild may commence probably in september!!
After that it will go to a paint shop for some rectification to some blistering it has on roof, boot and bonnet!!
Really need to pull my finger out and do these jobs on it cause in the past 2 years its been on the road I've rarely used it cause of the engine problem!!

So lately I've been busy doing this;

The actual removal was done in one saturday morning and the car was put back in storage and tucked up for its sleep

Then the real work started

As per my usual I felt I could improve a bit on the look so

And as is now, almost ready o put back in;

The engine was started last week on the floor and it started immediately 3 or 4 times!!
Saturday it was put back in the car and before fitting the radiator etc we tried it again and it started again first time!!
When everything was fitted back, water poured in, bonnet fited back as well, it did start but misfired badly, tried pushing it downhill to no avail, I had to tow it back and still no joy. The culprit was found to be the points, fitted couple of months ago, original nos lucas. However a good clean saw them back in action but to my surprise, it was back to square 1!!!!
That is when pressing the clutch pedal the engine still slowed down, almost stalling at times!!!!!!

I cant understand why its doing that.
What was done to the engine basically is the crankshaft was skimmed because it had been hitting the block since one of the thrust washers had fallen in the sump, then new thrust washers purchased and one fitted and the other was fabricated in bronze since it was oversize!
When fitted back in the movement was fractional and deemed good!!
So if the problem was the movement in the crankshaft, how is it now its been fixed, the problem still remained?!

Hi, sorry for not replying to this thread but;

I've been really busy at work lately but in the meantime also found the time to take the engine out (again) and re-investigate the problem.
I had bought another all steel 1500 engine from a hunter, it had been lying in a field covered up for the past 22 years or so!!!!
However we dismantled it and found the crankshaft to be in fine condition much better than mine and standard so it was used instead of mine, this time though the new thrust washers were put back but the one which would fall again otherwise was drilled, and the block drilled accordingly and 3 dowel pins in bronze inserted so that it did not fall off again (this was something my mechanic used to do in the good old days and had proved a good solution so we tried it).
As it stands the engine is complete and we will try starting it on the floor tomorrow and if successful will be going back in the car on thursday hopefully!!!

Just keep that engine motoring and I am sure it will just get better and better.

Forgot to update the thread!!
Last wednesday we started the engine on the floor and pushed the car there in order for an early start on thursday.
Thursday at 7.45 we were already pulling up the engine and pushing forward the car to put the engine back in, and it went smoothly!!
By 13.30 we were ready to go although the brand new thermostat housing started spraying water mimicing a fountain more than anything!!
A new cork gasket was made and replaced the paper gasket fitted together with some instant gasket sealant stuff, and that cured it!!

The hunter was then given a couple of runs around and to the petrol station to put some fresh petrol in and put back into the garage since the weather wasn't good at all!!

On saturday after helping my cousin patch up the exhaust (temporarily) on his fiat 124 I together with his help started cleaning the hunter's engine bay and gave a quick polish to the body!!
The interior needs a good clean too but that can wait for now!!
I then parked it back in its garage and covered it up for the time being hoping for some better weather so I can go for a drive in it!!
Couple of photos will follow of the engine bay when I have bothered to transfer them to the pc.
What is left to do is respray the boot, bonnet, roof and part of the passenger side front mudguard, a job which will hopefully be done when 2013 starts.

Oh well the paint ain't that bad even close up but the problem is there are small rust blobs forming beneath the paint on the panels mentioned and therefore the paint will be removed and the panels sanded down to bare metal to remove this rust then resprayed!!
It will cost me around 750 euros to have them done but it will then be much better!!!
It still won't be a show car but that was never my aim!
