Hi, wonder if anyone can help.

Trying to get my Vauxhall FB Victor VX490 to run right.

The VX has got twin carburettors and have had it running but if a just let it tick over the revs increase and decrease without me touching it. What could be the problem?

The carburettors are balanced and the slow running screws are adjusted.

Paul

A wandering tickover is often the result of an induction air-leak.

I'm not sure if your carb has the same set-up,but I remember having a similar problem with a PB Vauxhall in the 70's.Viva's used to have the same problem. It was caused by the heat from the exhaust manifold actually burning a hole through into the inlet manifold.I fixed it by inserting a plate between the two,but a better fix would be to have it brazed.
hope this helps.

If i remember from my day's working on these they have twin Stromberg's have you tried enriching the mixture to see if this make's any difference, or as has been suggested it may be an air leak this can normally be found by using an oil can putting the oil along the inlet manifold to head joint and see if it get's sucked in will show up as blue smoke as well or around the carb to inlet manifold joint's if none of these work the carb's may need new diaphram's another thing, will it run ok if you increase the rev's slightly, are you trying to get it to tickover to slow, these 4/90's do not tickover like like the normal cooking engine.
