My son was riding his beautifully restored 15-year-old Ducati yesterday and was pulled in by a roadside check. They impounded the machine because where he had the frame powder coated the number could not be read. I don't know if this was a particularly jobsworth officer or current policy. It has proved very inconvienient and costly so watch out.

sounds like a jobsworth to me.can't remember the last time a copper looked for my frame number.then again,i rarely get pulled these days!

Mind you - They'll have a job reading the frame no on the AJS - unless they want to take the tank off.....

And if your son had had his bike stolen previously, and the thieves had hidden the frame number under paint, and then sold it as a ringer, and then this stop and check had found your sons bike, and then the Police had returned it......

I know it's a bit of a pain for your son but I'm with the old bill on this one.If they start letting all painted over or obscured frame and chassis numbers go unchecked it will be a ringers idea of heaven.

Point taken, my comments were ill chosen. But the traffic division of the Old Bill does not exactly cover itself in glory in this part of the world. They seem incapable of stopping yobs in their unsilenced hatchbacks tearing up and down a busy seafront but set up a speed check on a uninhabited slip road where the pickings are easy.

They still do those, about 3 yrs ago my son drove a fire engine red Subaru Turbo with huge gold wheels and a silencer system you could send a small boy up to check the valves. I told him it was a licence loser, (he drove like a @@@@), and it was. One cop recognised his name, asked if he was my son, then booked him, because that's the way I trained him. No nepotism here. The six months mountain biking probably saved his life as he isn't as talented as he thinks he is, but doesn't want to ride a bike again except for leisure.

In Australia, my XY Ford was always a problem for a pink slip [MOT] It did not have an engine number stamped on it. One year, a smart old mechanic told me that if the engine had to be replaced under warranty , they just dropped a new engine in with no numbers ! The good old days !

On the subject of the BiB I still have a very bad taste in my mouth from July. Pulled over on a bright sunny morning by an unmarked car and he got out with fine pad in hand. I had committed the heinous crime of letting the MOT overrun two days. No chance to say sorry, just £60 on the spot. If the police want co-operation from Joe Public, a simple requirement to produce within seven days would have sufficed, not a heavy handed approach. Before anyone comments to the contrary, I know it was my fault, but it was an oversight and the car had had completely new tyres on the day before and been serviced a month before. It was MOT'd the same afternoon without any trouble. Where has the humanity gone in this world?

We get reminders for Road Tax and Insurance. Why not for MOT? Many people must overlook it innocently!
Since the first MOT and original first registaration must closely coincide, why is the Road Tax licence issue not tied in with the MOT date?
Even a visible window sticker might help in many ways.

ahh the good old days
while riding a 35 empire star to the vmcc scotish national in sunney perth i was pulled over in edinburgh for doing 40 in a 30 limit (pre bypass)
and the poor policeman thought he was going to have a field day
no lights
no speedo
well after a bit of light banter he checked with someone and sent me on my way
as the above were classed as extras
