What oil should I be using in an oil bath air filter? I'm in the process of fitting a NOS filter to the Dodge, but I'm curious as to what I should put in it?

thanks, R

Hi Rick,

On my old VW's I always used normal engine oil, I suppose its only there to catch dust after all!!

Found this discussion about VW ones for you which might be of interest...

Cheers

On most commercials from the fifties to the seventies,we used to use castrol xl--a very light viscosity but any 20/50 would be suitable imo.
Take care not to exceed the reservoir line or arrow markings as you`ll get problems with engine air volume into the venturi being starved.

Generally, we used to fill the oil bath with whatever the engine was having in it. I still service a series2 Land Rover, and that has the same 20w/50 as the engine. As D4B says, it's only to catch dust, and as oil prices are going up, I would tend to use any old own brand from the supermarket.

Same as exbmc mentioned. Back in the day usually 30w summer and 10w winter in the northern areas. Just use the oil that you're using in the crankcase.
