Could anyone tell me how to identify an engine I have please.
It's an ohv ford but I'm not sure if it's a 1300 or 1600, if of course they did a 1600 ohv that is.Where the engine number should be is just smooth and doesn't look like it has ever had anything stamped there.
Were the oil filters different or something like that? It's been about thirty five years since I owned a cortina and that was a mk 1.

The Cortina Mk3 1600 was an OHC whilst the 1300 was a OHV. There was a 1600 OHV in the Mk1 & Mk2 Cortina, the 1600 block was slightly taller.

Thank you Inglewood, is there any way to obviously tell whether it's mk2 or mk3 please as I may have been given wrong information as to it's origin as well as it's size. The rotor arm turns anti clockwise and Ive a feeling that that used to determine something but can't remember what!
Old age does play some rotten tricks doesn't it.

Is there a casting number?

EG: 2737E, 2733E, 691M, 711M, 771M

Does it have a crossflow head?

I've checked the casting number and it's 711M6015BA if that helps at all.
And it is a crossflow.

That makes it a Mk2 1600 block

Once again Sir I'm in your debt, thank you.
Now if I could prevail on your obvious wealth of knowledge just once more, is there anywhere on line that I may find service information for this engine such as oil capacity, plug and point gaps, timing figures, etc.etc. I will try to find a Haynes manual but I could really do with something a little more urgently if you could help at all please.

If it has a Ford distributor, the points gap will be 25 thou, and the same for the plugs. cant remember how much oil it takes, once you have set the plugs and points set it as near TDC as poss and try and fire it up, minor turning off the distributor should find the best spot for running.
