Do I need another project ....no
Have I got time to restore it..no
Will my better half approve...no

Conclusion...Buy it! Very Happy

On the plus side its a pretty solid car and shares lots of bits with the SE and Z, and I have a load of spares for these... I'm thinking of dropping an SE engine and 4 speed box in it (have some spare) rebuilding the brakes, re- wire and put on the road as is......

What's your assessment of it now you've had chance for a good look at it? Is the ash frame ok?

Hi Rick

you probably did see it on ebay!, it was on twice, I resisted it the first time, but was weak when it popped up again after the original sale failed!

The ash frame has seen better days, the seller said it would need replacing, you probably could get away with some more local repairs around the sill/door section. All the bits are there to use as patterns, although I believe complete ash frames are available from a couple of suppliers.

Its missing the front shock absorbers, so if anyone can help here? I think Morris fitted both DAS 8 and lever arm shocks ?

Dave

Nice buy, I seem to recall they were famous for the chassis rotting at the rear where it curved up. Might be worth checking.

My friend had a similiar car back in the 1960s, it was very reliable.

Regards Kels.

I've got a few odd Ford lever arm dampers around, not sure they'd be the same though Confused

The other day I heard whisper of a Morris 8 tourer somewhere not far from us, parked up since 1972. I must see if I can find out more about it Smile

Hi Dave, the s1 eights had Armstrong pear shaped shocks, I can take a pic of mine if you like, most people replace them with the later Armstrong lever shocks because the old ones are pretty cr@p. I still have the originals in mine and think they are ok if you don't mind a bit of a bumpy ride. Not sure but I think you need an adapter if you want to fir the later shocks.

Morris 8 fans, in case you missed one of today's additions to the site updates thread, I'll copy it in here too as I think it'll be of interest:

Strange, but true: a visitor to the site searching for photos of the type of car his father-in-law once owned, stumbles across a '30s photo of his mother sat in just such a car. Read more on this page (below photo no.1).

If you are working on the brake system remember it is an American Lockheed system with the usual mix of threads.
MORRIS 8 1935, Ser I & II BRAKE SYSTEM THREADS

The Morris 8 1935, Ser I & II brake system continued Morris Motors mixing of screw threads, because they used a Lockheed (US company) system on a British vehicle. This is on most Morris vehicles until circa 1948.
