Hi,

While I was fitting my recondition leaf springs, I was knocking a bolt through one of the eyes when it snapped the cast iron spring hanger on the chassis.
Now not sure what to do........

1) The car is a 1933 Singer, and while it might be possible to find one of the castings I'm not holding out much hope. They are fixed to the chassis with rivets
2) I'm a bit worried why it snapped relatively easily...would it have failed anyway?
3) The internal structure looked poor, and I would think any repair would not be suitable as the anchor for a rear leaf spring?!

The only thing I can think of, is getting some ~6mm steel plate and spending a lot of time cutting/MIGing a bracket which looks the part. Then bolting it back with fake rivets.

Any ideas?.....

My idea would be the same as yours.

Make one. Should be easy enough as you have the original to "copy". I'm assuming that you have access to suitable facilities. A friendly steel stockist with an offcuts bin is always handy, too. Smile

Afraid not.

They look like an inverted U....I know this doesn't help!
I'll try and post a photo tomorrow.

I also need to see if they are the same as the ones on my later Singer Roadster.
Lazy I know!..........I've been busy looking after the kids, and tonight I've been invited to the Pub - so It looks like it will have to wait! Laughing

Guys,

Thanks for your help.

Just to close down this thread, this is what has happened....

Called my Singer guy......he didn't have anything but said that he could get a bronze one cast from the old one (Glued back together).....and said it would probably cost about £20 with the firm he used!!!.

After a brief pause for thought, I decided that it would be a much better option than my MIG & Metal solution. By the time I had posted it to him, he had sent me an original cast iron part he had managed to find in the corner of a shed.
£40, not bad for a rare part.

Once again thanks for all your help.

Thanks for that. The tutorial says to use the URL Rolling Eyes

Anyway.....I will try to only work on the car when I'm in the right frame of mind, and can get rid of the Kids......and hopefully I won't snap any more highly specific 70 year old castings.

It's times like that which make you want to do up a 'more popular' classic!
