Hello,

I'm just about to start to strip for inspection a Morris Six engine (1950 ish). I have the workshop manual but no special tools and wondered if anyone has any tips about removing the camshaft drive and cam followers without the right kit?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Nigel

Can't remember re camshaft etc but valve clearances are impossible to set correctly without the proper two 'C' spanners, one which works vertically & one horizontally( from a 55 year memory),cheers,JD.

And if another ancient memory recalls correctly the valves are Sodium filled too. So you better hope you don't need any.

Thanks chaps. I'm going to make up the tools getting the general idea from the manual's illustrations. I think replacement valves - Stellite I think - are available, well, that's what I think I've read somewhere. I'm hoping the internals, when I get to them, will be serviceable; the engine turns freely and compressions are good.
Cheers,
Nigel

Does anyone know if there was ever a gearbox for the Wolseley 6/80 or Morris Six that had a floor change instead of the column change?

I rather doubt it. If the gearbox is the same one as used on the later Morris Isis then I think the selector mechanism is on the left side of the gearbox. There was a floor shift available on the LHD Morris Isis which sat at the outside between the seat and the door. I can't say if it was also on the RHD cars tho'.

I seem to recall that there were two versions of the Morris Isis, the earlier model had a column change and the later model had a floor change to the right of the driver's seat, this being on right hand drive cars.

As far as I remember the Morris Six and Wolseley 6/80 all had column change, my father's 6/80 certainly did.

Enryte/Jeeves,

I had mine (a '58 MK2) in Canada and wasn't sure if the Home market also had the floor shift. Since I last posted I had a thought that it would be a completely different gearbox since the Isis engine was an 'Austin' but I would think it might be worth looking into. What is the 6/80 shift mechanism like? If it's one cable controlling the selector gate and a rod doing the gear selecting then it might be adaptable. All you have to do now is find a MK2 Isis and have a look.

The Riley Pathfinder RHD version had a floor mounted gear stick between the seat and the door.

I wonder if a 6/110 box would fit

Thanks chaps; lots of food for thought there - much appreciated. The gear change levers (selector and shifter) are situated on the right and to the rear of the gearbox. I'm going to have quite a lot going on on the right side of the box because I'm using the Hillman cable and rod brake system.
On the left side of the box are what I believe are the other ends of the selector and shifter lever rods. Are these ends employed on left hand vehicles? If that's the case then they'll come in handy if a suitable box can't be found.

PS If anyone is interested or has an idle moment to fill, I'm doing a blog on Wordpress documenting the progress of the project. The address is: nigelhamlinwright.wordpress.com

Thanks again
