Hi Guys
Hope you can help with a couple of questions...
On my car and on the general engine diagram there is no air filter. Was it generally common to NOT have air filters on cars of this era (mid 1950s)?
What's the worst case scenario for using unfiltered air?
I have a Ford special which doesn't really have much spare room under the bonnet. Are there any other options to protect air flow into the engine?
Cheers

Vehicles commonly had no air filter up to that time. Often just a dished plate over the air intake to prevent anyone covering it with their hand (very dangerous) or anything else large being sucked in.
Bedford petrol trucks in partcular could be heard "sucking" with the throttle wide open from hundreds of yards away.
In hot countries with lots of dust in the atmosphere a filter is essential, but in Britain vehicles did not seem to suffer much as long as road grit etc, came nowhere near.
We refer to "air cleaners", but in fact a primary function is as "air silencers". Inspection of the filter elements will show that it takes many, many thousands of miles to collect an appreciable amount of dirt.

Hi Dean,
You could try a remote air filter connected to the mouth of the carb by a suitable size of durable flexible hose if height is an issue - it all depends on how much you want the under-bonnet to look authentic as opposed to wanting the air to be filtered.
Bottom line - with specials, ingenuity was always the name of the game. |
