Following on from Mike's point about bolts bottoming out. Have you checked that there isn't any crud at he bottom of the boltholes? Especially since the block has been machined.
What sort of radiator cap is fitted to your car? I made up a pressure tester for my Jaguar which has a screw on cap using an old bicycle inner tube. Of course you would need to have a spare cap that you can drill a hole in to do this. I can sendyou a pic. ifyou are interested.

Thats a good point actually, I never really thought of that.
As for the radiator cap, its a simple screw on type, but it is made out of brass and bakelite so I would be hesitant to destroy our spare one! |

Fiatguy,
Try removing the madallion thing and see what size the hole is. It only has to be about 8mm diameter. I had a spare cap that had been drilled to take a Jaguar leaper. The bicycle inner tube that I had had a rubber valve stem which is slightly thicker than the 'naked' ones. I glued the rubber to the cap with Evostick so it should be removeable. Attached are a ccouple of pics.

That makes sense now, it could be done on mine however I would need a parger diameter valve as I think the hole in the cap is quite large |

An old car inner tube then?
If you use a bicycle tube with a threaded valve you could use fibre washers or something to seal the hole and glue the rubber to the cap so no air should escape and actually you may be able to use the rubber to seal the neck to cap gap.
