Hard on the heels of its exemption of pre-1960 cars from the MoT, the government has announced a review of VED, the annual road tax, which pre-1973 vehicles are currently exempt.

According to the BBC News website, discussions are already taking place though proposals have yet been made and the government will listen to the views of motoring groups before taking any decisions.

Any thoughts on how this could affect the 300,000+ vehicles in the UK that currently aren't required to pay VED? Is this going to be a case of giving with one hand and taking away with the other?

I think it's more likely aimed at bashing people who are opting for new, so-called "green" cars, with their current low levels of VED£.

Does your figure of 300,000 pre-73 cars relate to the number of cars that are on the road and actually paying zero £ for their VED, or the number of cars registered that date to pre-73, including non-runners?

The 300,000 figure is from Honest John - so it must be correct... Wink

The review, as I understand it, is to recoup the loss of income from VED. I doubt the government will care too much which group of motorists make up the loss, can't you hear them saying 'But we just exempted you from the MoT...!'

I think this is what you read? Here's the link:

Looks like the gubbinsment is sh**ting themselves because the free and/or very cheap road taxes on new vehicles will result in a huge loss of revenue in a few years as all the older 'new' vehicles get scrapped.

But the income raised by taxing pre-60's vehicles is but a drop in the ocean. While it's certainly true to say the gubbinsment are a collection of little weasels I think they'll realise that if revenue is the driving force then they'll have to look beyond the classic car scene.....

I agree Julian but will they ignore the opportunity to tax a third of a million previously untaxed vehicles. I fear the temptation may be too great Crying or Very sad

Ah well we'll just have to wait and see! There's all sorts of temptations out there like pasty tax, caravan tax and capped tax relief on charitable donations - the trouble is that if they act in an insensitive way they're liable to get a bloody nose.

For my money they'll not risk backlashes from minority groups like classic car owners and go for the low fruit first, ie the £15 VED on a 900cc VW Polo will go up to (say) £50......

Only to cause distraction from the Levson inquiry. The Tories are shrewd operators, once they wriggled out of any involvement with Murdoch they'll revert to type.

[bernard] Wouldn't you need rather a lot of room to do a U-turn with a caravan? [/bernard]

Perhaps this is where they "consider re-instating rolling 25-year exemption" like they said before they got in. They'd make far more out of extra revenue from the fuel I would probably use if I could take my car out on the odd nice day in winter than they get for the six months road tax I pay now.

I would imagine if they're trying to raise revenue, as others have said they would be better of targeting a larger market than the classic vehicles.

Of course it was the Tories that introduced the rolling 25 year VED exemption in the first place. And their replacements in No.10 that binned it.

As for the VED review, let's just see what happens eh?

And what makes it even more funny is that all the budget contents got leaked several weeks in advance - that was another blooper! Laughing

If you look at the unemployment situation it's patently obvious that they don't have a clue. Paying £££££££'s to privateers such as A4e and Working Links to bully people into jobs that don't exist, and stuffing people into slave labour punishment schemes that are actually increasing the unemployment rate - why should the bosses give anyone a job when they can get a "work experience" slave to do the job for nowt, courtesy of the government?

Welshrover, you have the same opinion as many people, and i guess that number increases daily, as more mad schemes and methods to make us all poorer come out of Parliament. Rolling Eyes
