Evening Gents!

It's been a while since I was last here, long story short, I will soon be in a position to seriously consider buying one of these fantastic cars. I had looked a few years ago, naively at cheap cars on Ebay that probably ended up on the banger track. I have now done a fair bit of home work on then and I intend to pay decent money for a decent example.
My Dad had one of these back in the late 70's/early 80's in BRG with a black interior. Sadly, this little beauty vanished almost as quickly as it appeared...

Any pointers to look out forwhen buying would be much appreciated Gents, i'll keep you up to date on the hunt.

I've had Series 1s in the past (6 & 12 cyl), and there's a guide to buying on the main site.

Unsurprisingly, rot is the big killer of XJs, this is the summary I put in that article as a starting point:

inner and outer sills
front sill closing panel (behind the front road wheels)
front wings, lower bottom edge and all around the headlamp
bottom edge of the bonnet and hinge mountings (especially on the S1)
inner wings, lower side members and battery tray (under bonnet)
footwells (lift the carpets)
rear arches and dog legs
rear under-bumper valances (bolt on)
rear wings, around the fuel filler caps
bootlid lower edge
spare wheel well (beneath boot carpet)
door bottoms (skins and frames)
front and rear screen surrounds (especially on the S3)
front crossmember
front radiator support
rear suspension radius arm mountings
floorpans along their outer edge

On the plus side there are lots of parts around for XJs.

The condition of the interior is important too, sagging headlinings hastily re-glued with spray glue aren't uncommon.

The 2.8s used to burn pistons when they were current, but probably won't be an issue now. The 4.2 is probably the one to go for though, the V12 is spectacularly thirsty on fuel.

Hi Will,

A friend of mine is currently puting his XJ12 up for sale. It really is in excellent shape and I think he's looking for £3.3k for it.
The price difference could cover the fuel consumption difference for a substantial length of time.

I've a new grille for a S1 XJ12 in the garage, I hung on to it in case I bought another XJ6 as I think it looks much better (and it'd upset a few purists Wink)

Today someone mentioned a 4.2 for sale locally in pale blue, meant to be a minter, asking 8k so I hear.

Hi Peter

Thank you for the heads up. I am really after a Series 1, mainly for it's looks alone! The short wheelbase, the front end and the 'classic' Jaguar dashboard. Fuel consumption wouldn't be a huge issue with regards to an XJ12, however, it's complexity would be, as you can see!



Therefore i'm sticking to the XJ6. Thanks again for posting though!

Rick, these are too rich for me, but I thought i'd post these two beauties. Half way down the page in the 1970's section of the stock list...

Yup could be that one, nice being manual overdrive. Exact same colour as the 4.2 I had, probably in better condition though Wink

The photo of the XJ12 engine takes me back, when I bought my lwb V12 the balance pipes across the top were scattered in the boot. It took a while to figure out where they all went. I also replaced all the coolant hoses, that took a little while also.

I'll dig out some pics. The midnight blue XJ12L was a lovely old thing, it was regularly pressed into service to go and sign on at the local job centre Smile

I purchased a 1972 XJ6 4.2 Auto about ten years ago.
It is the short wheelbase.
40,000 miles from new.
Engine and gearbox perfect.
Very good bodywork all original
Totally original interior in very good condition.
One owner from new,a local gentleman who ran an upmarket furniture store in our town.
He passed away and it sat in the family garage unused.
I mentioned to the son that I liked classic cars and he told me about it.
Next thing it was in my garage.

In the last ten years I have done minimum mileage in it.
I was thinking of selling it because i just do not use it enough.

Here we are on our trip round Europe in our XJ6 Series 3 1983.
We went through Belgium,Germany,Switzerland,Italy and into southern France. Here we are at the Gorge Du Verdun on the Route Napolean north of Cannes.
The car performed effortlessly and never missed a beat....unlike my wallet which took a bashing at the petrol stations.

This photo was taken in the morning after a night of wild camping next to the lake.

Hello Rick,

Just checked back here, going to look at what looks like a really good example this weekend! Just doing as much 'homework' as I can!

I'd moved away from them a while ago, even went to see what looked like a really good Sunbeam Alpine about 3 weeks ago, settled on a price but my gut feeling wouldn't let me commit to it due to filler in the wrong places...

There was a stunning XJ12 S1 on ebay the other day, maroon just like on the sales brochure of the day, fortunately it was too expensive for me - plus could I really live with that level of fuel consumption again? Mmmmm

Well chaps, after 7 years of wanting one i've finally got one!! It's a 1972 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 in Old English White. It has a few very minor cosmetic issues at the bottom of the doors and a few very minor trim issues, all easily sorted. The history file has to be seen to be believed, it's had an absolute fortune spent on it over the years.

Pictures, taken by the seller, can be found here.

I've sorted storage for it, I pick it up on Wednesday.
