Welllllllll its taken me long enough to get it done, but the old girl got her new MOT this afternoon, wooohoooo
Checking through the old paperwork, she was last MOT'd in 94/95, but came off the road due to a terrible vibration it had when pulling away, and a distinct lack of power (!). For several years I did very little with it, other than shunting it around, and two house purchases over this period.
Early last year I set to with recommissioning the old girl. Cosmetically its a bit shabby, and had been brush painted many times already. I couldn't face pulling it apart to make everything perfick, so decided to just do what was necessary to make it presentable, reliable, safe n usable, without worrying over cosmetics
First thing was to cure the bad shuddering (turns out one of the steady bars & mountings had cracked off the gearbox casing) and check the rest over. The job list looked something like (in no particular order)
- engine out, replace gearbox with a spare 'from stock'
- fit new clutch (full) and thrust bearing
- new gearbox & engine mountings
- replace rear radius rods
- replace wheels for smarter set
- replace 4 tyres (2 new, 2 good s/h)
- replace rear lamp units (Lucas, originals corroded)
- remove front axle, fit new shackle pins and new front transverse spring
- replace grille (original was bent)
- replace o/s/f wing (original was full of pudding and welded plates)
- replace one headlamp unit (original rusty)
- replace sump (original had a split in it)
- fit a better s/h screen assembly
- do small welding jobs here and there to cab
- refit everything!!
- rub down and a quick coat of brush paint to all panels
Some years back I'd replaced various engine valves and fitted new piston rings.
Today was my first drive of it since 1994ish, and to be honest I'd forgotten just how slow they are I'm glad I chose the longer, but much quieter, route to the MOT station, it gave me chance to re-acclimatise myself to what is really pre-war motoring. Even the Devon feels lively by comparison!!!
Anyway, the journey to and from the MOT went without a hitch, and once I've had the logbook amended (to historic status, then it'll qualify for zero rate roadtax) I can use it at last! Its insured with a classic car specialist for 1500 miles a year (doubt I'll reach that even!).
OOOO, bet you are excited, will have to see it on the road sometime soon.
It looked pretty good when I last saw it, and I am looking forward to getting mine running (may be a while though, so you must make sure that you keep yours on the road for a bit!). Then we can go on a little jolly somewhere, would look good in convoy?
Hi Stuchamp (I tried emailing you yesterday, but it bounced), yeah am very pleased!!! will be nice to collect this years Christmas tree in it, instead of strapping it to the roof of the Devon, like last year!
Took it for its first, post-MOT, run out today, it is definitely more happy doing 25-30mph on leafy back lanes, than racing along at 30mph+ on the busier roads. In a 2 mile stretch I was overtaken 4 times and had a queue of 6 cars behind me by the time I pulled off onto a quieter lane
Rick great to see you have your fordson finally back on the road thats awesome mine has a ways to go did a welding job the other day on some inner fender panels they came up well.On my truck also the gearbox mount was broken off maybe thats quite common.The pictures look really good.I liked the comment about holding up the tractors as revenge we are in a rural area as well.It is silage season quite alot of tractor traffic on the road at the moment.
Took it out for a spin this afternoon, its been raining today so encountered a few quite deep puddles on the back lanes, but had to 'rush' back as someone had decided at the last minute to come over and look at the Merc estate that I'm selling on. I think the pickup is quite dirty now, but somehow an old truck looks better grubby than all clean!!! I'll wash it sometime, but no rush!
touch wood its going to plan, and running ok, I want to get a tarp made to cover the back sometime (I remember you giving me a number for someone who might be able to assist???)
I picked up the E83W bits today, so let me know if still interested in the tank. It comes with a sender unit, and filler cap. Curiously I think there is another sender float rattling around inside the tank so you'll need to fish that out (I've not tried as yet!!), but it looks like a good 'un with no rot
Yeah I know of a tarp company, but will have to dig out the number if you want it? Also I think Dave was telling me of one the other day that makes custom ones for landys, so they could make one up, I will find out about both.
P.S. Tank sounds good will come over and see it soon! What are the other bits like?
I popped round to ricks yesterday to take some refference photos of his e83w pickup to help my rebuilding efforts, he also supplied me with a manifold. Thanks for that! I also had a little ride in CJM and it has spured me on to get on with mine, really fun, just to potter around in!
