I had the full set, sold them on ebay a year or so ago and just kept a few Dinky and Corgi vehicles etc that I have now restored! Crescent did a very similar set of racing cars but slightly smaller in scale.

Always thought the huge tyres made them look extra special - had quite a few over the years, but long gone now.

I had an Alfa like the one in the photo. I also had two more Dinky racers, I think one was a Ferrari it was blue and yellow. The other was pale green an HWM I think.

I never had one of those but the favourite racer in the playground in my day seemed to be "Thunderbolt". These went the furthest.

I think I have the same collection - any signs of fatigue in the base metal they're made from? Crescents are notorious for cracking up.

Hi all! Been away for quite a while (no NOT in jail!) and glad to be back.
I'm in one of my 'toy' phases and thought you might like to see this weeks haul!

The Dinky racers in the back row and the green HWM in front left all came in one online auction lot at a very reasonable rate per car and of the thirteen Dinkys (second left is a Crescent Maserati) in the lot of fourteen cars, eleven of them are the first series. These are the 23 series cars - 23f Alfa-Romeo, 23g Cooper-Bristol, 23h Ferrari, 23j HWM, 23k Talbot-Lago and 23n Maserati.

As you can see they've all been hand-painted in red, blue or pale green with some white detailing and all have been hand-numbered. Since I'm not interested in their value so much as their pleasure potential, this is of no consequence. Interestingly, after having taken the trouble to repaint them, the owner seems to have only made light use of them as there are very few signs of damage, normally common with unboxed Dinky toys. If I could work out how to only remove the top layer of paint they'd be almost pristine underneath! Also, one of the Ferraris has the 'triangle nose', apparently uncommon.

The cars are l. to r. back row Alfa-Romeo, Crescent Maserati, five Cooper-Bristols, two Dinky Maseratis, Talbot-Lago and three Ferraris.
Front l. to r. Dinky HWM, Timpo EX135, unknown two seater sports, Timpo racer, Dinky Connaught.

The anonymous sports car has no maker's name or mark but has Made in England and the number 861 cast inside and the legend 'Tank Capacity 14 Gallons' behind the hood. It also has two-part tinplate wheels. The model is well-detailed with bonnet louvres, bonnet straps, a detailed dashboard with four-spoke steering wheel, clocks, etc., a gear lever and handbrake, running board treads, studs and fold creases in the hood, ribbed seats and a detailed radiator and cap. This begs the question 'Why go to such trouble and not put your name on it'? Does anyone have any info or ideas?

This is not actually the total haul for the week as there are several others in the post - a Dinky Bristol 450, a Crescent Grand Prix Connaught, two Corgi Vanwalls and a Timpo Speed of the Wind. (Goes pale as he thinks of cost!) :shock I'll post some more pics in due course.

I love my diecasts, the weirder the better, so let's have pics of yours.

UPDATE:
As many of you will know Photobucket has blocked images from being displayed unless users susbscribe to an expensive service. I have tried to access my photos on their site but they seem to have been made inaccessible. Thus I can't download them and use them in another photo hosting site to update this post. Apparently this has affected millions of photos on sites like OCC and means that those photos are effectively lost. I shall eventually photograph my whole collection and may then be able to replace the missing images but, until then, you'll have to use your imaginations. Smile

Hi
I know that the H/Ls moulded to the wings are incorrect, but the radiator header is very reminiscent of Riley.

Peter, you're spot on! Not a manufacturer I've ever heard of but there's no doubt about the identification. For a while I thought the toy might be modelled on the Squire but I couldn't find a close match photograph-wise.

The wheels would appear to be wrong as, according to the second article, they should be bakelite not tin but this is definitely the Jaguar SS100 roadster. Sadly there is some damage to the front wings and the aero screens but nothing that a bit of Miliput wouldn't put right.

Thanks for your input.

I used your link Rick and visited your Timpo page. That's a nice collection. As far as I can see there were only three racer type Timpo models - the two in my pics and their interpretation of the 'Speed of the Wind'.
I also tripped over the page with Jolly Roger, Timpo and Merlin models, all apparently based on the same 'Maserati' mould. Do you have the rubberband powered Merlin? I'll be on the lookout for one from now on.

I expect you'll have come across this site http://www.sordetmaco.com/ which has some excellent reference pics.

Happy New Year to all!

Further to my posts of October I've gathered a few more diecast racers and am currently working on a display for Dover Transport Museum. The themes will be Classic Racing Cars and Speed Record Cars, to which end I've added the 23a Racing Car based on George Eyston's 'Magic Midget', 23b Hotchkiss, 23c Mercedes-Benz, 23d Auto-Union Record car, 23e 'Speed of the Wind', another Eyston car, 23m Thunderbolt, Eyston again, and 23p Goldie Gardner's M.G. record car.

Since I have several of various Dinky, Crescent, and Corgi racing cars I thought that, rather than repainting them in their original colours ,I'd reproduce some of the liveries that they were raced in during the 1950s. For example Johnny Claes raced a Connaught in the colours of Ecurie Belge - a bright yellow. The same car had previously been driven for the Connaught factory team by Dennis Poore, in green with a yellow nose band. I shall keep at least one of each in original colour scheme.

Does anyone have information about other team's or equipe's liveries for the Ferrari, Maserati 4CLT, the Alfa Tipo 158, and the Cooper-Bristols along with non-factory Vanwalls and BRMs?

If anyone has suggestions about other models that might be added to the collection, please let me know.

Thanks
John
