Jacked up the old girl today and treated the underside to a liberal dose of Waxoyl (a handy Christmas present). While slopping the gloop around, I noticed that one of the rear shock absorbers is leaking so a fresh pair were sourced on eBay this afternoon. Hopefully they'll arrive and be fitted this week, then another hour or so of rustproofing should see that job finished.

Hopefully an MOT attempt won't be too far off.

New rear shocks were fitted today, the lower fixing nuts and bolts were well rusted up but a combination of heat and a nut splitter saw the job done without major aggro.

Waxoyling on the Volvo completed this evening, down off the axle stands (at last) so just a few odd checks to do before the looming MOT!

A peer under the Jaguar also showed a few seams on the floors that weren't particularly well protected, so they too got a splash of Waxoyl. A shower of spray grease inside the outriggers was also added for good measure.

MOT successfully negotiated. I wish the same could now be said for the driver's door, as for some reason both inner and outer door handles have decided to become inoperative. I heard something drop or move inside the door when I closed it, so my guess is a link has fallen off somewhere within.

Spent a few hours scratching my head and skinning knuckles, fixing the door handle mechanism. The linkage to the interior handle, and the coiled spring that attaches to the catch that sticks out of the door, had fallen out of the main body of the catch assembly, rendering it completely u/s.

A lot of fiddling with the mechanism inside the door, just about accessible by pulling back the interior trim and sitting in the back of the car, saw the door open for work to begin properly.

With everything removed and on the bench, it took a little while and a couple of attempts to figure out how to put it back together properly, the square rod that sticks out from behind the door lock and into the mechanism was particularly tricky to deal with. I'm happy to report that both handles now function correctly Smile

As it's National Classic Car Day (Chris Evans' idea), the Volvo was dragged out into the mist for the school run this morning.

The Volvo was recently used for a day out to Shropshire, photos and notes regarding this very pleasant journey make up the following article on the main site:

After a brief trip earlier today, the old girl was treated to an all-over polishing.

Last week the Volvo was taken over to an evening pub gathering not far from here. While I was there the fix I made to the door latch mechanism let go, so today a more robust repair was made.

Interestingly, a bloke I got talking to at the meet told me about a 444 he's been offered for not-a-lot of £. It's been in tall grass for a long time, which hasn't done the floor any favours, but otherwise doesn't sound too bad. It's an interim car, with the split windscreen but the one piece rear screen. I don't know if he plans to rescue it or not, but could be a neat find.

A chap from the Rover 75 & ZT Community forum was keen to take some photos of the 544 today while parked in a nearby village, apparently they have a thread running for oddball sightings Smile Hopefully OCC will get a mention alongside his photos.

Well, I never thought I'd do it, but after lengthy deliberation I decided to part with the 544. The deal has been done, and soon it'll set sail to a new home, also in the NW of England. I'll probably kick myself for selling it, but I've had fun with it.
