Jacked up the old girl today and treated the underside to a liberal dose of Waxoyl (a handy Christmas present). While slopping the gloop around, I noticed that one of the rear shock absorbers is leaking so a fresh pair were sourced on eBay this afternoon. Hopefully they'll arrive and be fitted this week, then another hour or so of rustproofing should see that job finished.
Hopefully an MOT attempt won't be too far off.

Spent a few hours scratching my head and skinning knuckles, fixing the door handle mechanism. The linkage to the interior handle, and the coiled spring that attaches to the catch that sticks out of the door, had fallen out of the main body of the catch assembly, rendering it completely u/s.
A lot of fiddling with the mechanism inside the door, just about accessible by pulling back the interior trim and sitting in the back of the car, saw the door open for work to begin properly.
With everything removed and on the bench, it took a little while and a couple of attempts to figure out how to put it back together properly, the square rod that sticks out from behind the door lock and into the mechanism was particularly tricky to deal with. I'm happy to report that both handles now function correctly

Last week the Volvo was taken over to an evening pub gathering not far from here. While I was there the fix I made to the door latch mechanism let go, so today a more robust repair was made.
Interestingly, a bloke I got talking to at the meet told me about a 444 he's been offered for not-a-lot of £. It's been in tall grass for a long time, which hasn't done the floor any favours, but otherwise doesn't sound too bad. It's an interim car, with the split windscreen but the one piece rear screen. I don't know if he plans to rescue it or not, but could be a neat find.
