Way-hay, yippee, hip-hip hooray.
Maybe you've just got used to moderns. That first gear always made a racket. Looking forward to turning up the volume on the video. |

Ok I have managed to upload the video. It's a bit rough and ready, you can hear the big box of spinners jingling around behind me, I was taking no risks.
It's about 4.30 and 5.05 when I am behind the Audi pulling away you can hear the transmission whine that I am not sure about?

One thing that I noticed was that you blip the throttle on upshifts.....You don't have to do that. A blip is only required on downshifts. There seems to be a bit of whine in 1st. gear but that's probably normal. Did you change any parts? New & old can cause noise. Otherwise it sounded good.

I know Art it's one of those things. I haven't driven it in 17 years and know I had to blip the throttle going one way but couldn't remember which it was and there is too much going on for you to get a chance to think about it logically at the time. Changing up is just into neutral hold it for a bit and then into gear, down into neutral and a quick blip.
I am sure it will all become second nature after a few runs. It's like Peter said you become spoilt by moderns.
No new bits in the gearbox it could just be my imagination.

I think first gear is straight cut so could never be as smooth sounding?! as the others.
The "blip" going down is to achieve an engine speed as close as possible to that which it will have be once the lower gear is engaged.
I must say Tony, you drive it like an Italian. I was scared stiff down those lanes,
Brilliant car, not just pretty, really well put together. |

Hi
The blip won't do any good unless the clutch is back up in neutral as well.
What you are trying to do is get the gear on the layshaft up to the same speed as the gear you are trying to mesh it with on the final drive shaft.
Apologies if this sounds like Grandmother and sucking eggs, but we may well have younger members who have heard about DDC but don't know what it actually is.
Here is a simple diagram of a 4 speed box (No reverse for simplification)

Thanks for all the comments. Thanks Penman its good to get an idea of theory behind the need of DDC.
I went to Ricambio (Fiat 500 specialist) today and played the video to him and he reckons that it is the sound of the diff bearings starting to wear but nothing too major to worry about.
He also said that woman have the biggest problem getting their heads around DDC!!!!!!! I am not saying anything, I better get out and get practising!!!!!! |

True Sean, sun is out and a trips out are on the cards. Pity I missed the Bromley Pageant, it would have been good to have gone 20 years since the car was last there. I was out in Luigi today practising my DDC and it's a bit like riding a bike it all comes back to you after a while. The changing up is simple and I have sussed that out. Changing down is simply a case of preparing yourself to slow down a bit earlier for a junction than in a modern so that you get yourself down into second before stopping then pop it into 1st.
I got a thumbs up from a van driver that I drove past also lots and lots of turning heads. It's a lovely little car to drive on a sunny day with the sunroof open and the quarter lights wide open, directing cool air into the car.
It all started to come back to me after a while, there isn't really a need to slow down for corners etc as it handles like a go cart and just zips around corners and roundabouts. It was pulling like a train up a really steep hill in second, so much so that I had to change up to third.
As for the brakes, I did ask on the Fiat forum about disc brake upgrades but to be honest they are quite vague initially but if you have to stop in a hurry and need to stamp on the pedal they are very effective |

Tony, it's good you're having fun with the car. You should try driving my Austin 10 with cable brakes and you would soon be grateful for the Fiat's stopping ability.
I seem to remember you saying that the Schutz gun works with Waxoyl. Is there a canister of the stuff that will screw onto the gun? |

DDC is becomes a way of life after a short time, mine is a thread speed straight cut box, with no syncro on any gear. Next step is 'toe and heel', that is when the art is mastered. _________________ KA

Tony, is there a rubber cover on the mirror bracket? I think I see one on yours and vaguely remember it.
Also, can you remember which way round the bracket that the sunroof handle clamps into goes. I remember you got it wrong first time and I may have done too.
I'm finding your explanations very useful at the moment. |
