Hello,

as it is the first time in this forum I would like to say "Hello".

I have a 2 door saloon since a couple of weeks and need some support.
I am living in Germany and there are not too many of these vehicles around.

The car has originally an air silencer. The elbow mounted to the carb is still there but the cylindrical can + bracket is missing.

Does anyone of you have a similar car to take some pictures and to take some dimensions to allow me to reproduce the part and the bracket?

Or maybe you have one for sale.

In any case I would appreciate your comments or recommendations.

Best regards

Mark

Hi Mark, I have a 46 Morris 8 Ser E with the oil-bath air silencer/filter setup and have included some photos for you. It should be the same.

I have also enclosed 3 pics of an old air filter from a 60's mini that will fit if you just shorten the fastening bolt oryou can just put a tube over the bolt to take up the 4-6" height.

From front

From Distributor side

Silencer with cover removed

With silencer removed, showing carby and aluminium extension

Side view over distributor

Alloy thingy

Old Mini filter that fits to the alloy thing

Underneath the mini filter

The Mini Filter with replaceable paper element

Hope these are of some help to you.

Ian

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the forum.

You don't say whether it's a Series E like Ian's or a Series 2. If the latter there are some (not very good) pictures here:

Hi, the UK spec(home) Series E had an air silencer, the "Export" models were fitted with the oil bath filter. The GPO spec Z van also has the filter rather than a silencer.

Cheers Dave

Hello Dave,

Peter's exploded view shows exactly what I am looking for.

I have some documentation which claims that this silencer is one of the innovation of the 1938 model.

As said, the elbow is still there only the can is missing.

Best regards

Mark

Gidday Mark,

My Series 1 has the same air silencer, and I coincidentally have it off the car at the moment. It is fairly cruddy so will need a good clean up - to make it more photogenic Cool

I will be able to send you some shots and can also dimension up the 'can' for you in addition the bracket which is held down with one of the head retaining nuts. I will be able to do this next week for you.

Cheers

Gidday Mark and all,

Took the following photos of the Air Silencer and bracket.

Funny thing I had never realised this before, it doesn' t seem to function as an air fliter Shocked It is more like a small flow through muffler.

It is basically a can with an extension which fits into the caburetor air reciever. The inner tube is perforated sheet folded and spot welded - on the outside of this appears to be some fine steel mesh. I wasn't about to cut it it in half for a look so I don't know what fill the void - anyone else had one apart Question

1/ Air Silencer

2/ Looking at intake end

3/ Air outlet end

4/ 5/ End views

6/ 7/ Bracket attached to head.

The bracket was originally welded to the air silencer but at some stage had come adrift on mine Shocked I took some measurements and have come up with the following schematic. I reckon you will probably need to bend the bracket to make it fit nicely depending on the eventual size of your replacement Air Silencer.

I hope this helps you out mate,

Cheers

Hello Rosco,

thank you very much for such precise information.

Please let me know if I can be of any help.

Somewhere I read that the can is stuffed with charcoal fibers.

Now I need to find some time to reproduce.

Great stuff.

Best regards

Mark

Hello,

got the silencer finally through EBAY. It was heavily corroded. I dismantled it, took out the wool, got it sandblasted and then painted it with a primer.

As damping material I used sheep-whool which I bought at a loudspeaker shop.

Then assembled and painted in black.

I used sheep whool as I don't want ceramic fibers potentially coming through the engine. Works very well. Breathing noise is significantly reduced.

Thanks a lot for your support.

By the way I have now a spare manifold. The one between carburator and silencer. If you are interested, please let me know.

Next project will be to put 4 speed gearbox in the car as I am living in an area with some hills, which always results in second gear high revs.

Gearbox is on its way from GB.

Best regards

Mark
