1938 Morris 8 air silencer - need information

Afraid I've got a bit lost in this exchange, but if Ralph has a Series E engine with correct manifold for the Series E there will be insufficient clearance from the wing for the Series 1/2 air silencer elbow even if his car has the wing with indent to accommodate it. This is because the E manifold is wider than the earlier UB type.

As it turns out I have an MM engine block in mine with the original Series I head and manifolds and they all fit like a glove Cool

The only issue I have is the dip stick is tucked in very tightly between the starter motor and the water housing Sad as it is on the opposite side to original.

Yes, that's the point, Rosco. The UB manifold fits the available space well enough, but the wider E manifold doesn't leave enough room for the silencer elbow, even with the recessed wing. While using the UB manifold on an E engine is an option, it has the drawback of negating the 26% improvement in breathing and thus power gained from the E manifold's significantly larger inlet ports.

Hi Rossco & Richard. Thanks for the very useful advice and having looked carefully at the space between the carb and the fender, it looks like it's only mm to spare if I recess the fender. The problem here is the very high level of dust in the air and I would really liked to have the oil bath air filter fitted. The one fitted to the Series "E" AA93 in the parts book would not fit as the filter would be against the bonnet, think there's more space in the Series "E" body, that's why I got hold of the Van air silencer and filter. Will keep trying to figure out something. Ralph Sad

I think you would best fitting a more modern and less bulky filter; ok it's not original but engine rebuild ain't cheap eather!

Dave's right, of course. Whatever you manage to organise won't be original, so perhaps you'd be better off with an arrangement like this:



It's a K&N. My pal fabricated the adaptor to look like the silencer elbow, and the idea was to tuck it away as discreetly as possible. Originally an Amsoil oiled foam filter was used, but they tore apart in service.

As you can see, my Tourer does not have the recess in the wing because it pre-dates the air silencer, but with the UB engine and manifold there's just enough clearance since the engine mountings allow negligible movement.

New Zealand also has plenty of dirt roads, so it's a necessary mod.

Hi Richard, that mod looks really great, do you perhaps have the technical drawing for it and if so could you Email it to me at raubenheimer@icon.co.za. Whilst on the Forum, does anyone know how to take up the play in the steering box, is there any adjustment to the box at all, can't see one from the parts book. Thanks, Ralph

Afraid not, Ralph—there wasn't one. In essence we copied an original air silencer elbow with changes to suit the different orientation.

Steering box play is adjusted by removing shims from under the top and end covers of the unit. The Parts List shows the various thicknesses of brass shims which also act as gaskets.

However, it's very likely that the peg on the sector shaft arm, which runs in the worm, is worn, so it's advisable to withdraw the shaft and check. The time-honoured remedy is to press out the peg and turn it 90° from the original, so that the unworn surfaces are bearing on the worm, at least for most of the travel either side of straight-ahead. If you're feeling flush, new pegs are available from MG suppliers in Britain, because pre-war MGs used the same Bishop Cam steering box. Possibly they might also have the brass shims. You could also try Morris specialist Ian Harris: ian@harris84.fsnet.co.uk

Once the peg and worm are good the play can be fine-tuned with the shims, but take care that there are no tight spots over the full extent of travel.

Hi all, sorry for the delay in replying but a few things have happened in the interim. Thanks for for all the info and I can confirm that with the advise, I've sorted out the steering box and that seems to be much better now. As far as the air silencer is concerned, I've modified the fender to allow for the Z van silencer and oil bath filter to fit, just have to make the bracket from filter to head from a piece of flat bar. Engine is stripped at the moment to lap the valves in so that I can get some normal compression. Once agin, may thanks to all. Ralph
