I noticed the Volvo's ignition/ammeter light is staying on now permanently; a meter over the battery with the engine running shows 12v regardless of engine revs - I assume there's something up with the dynamo.

Other than brushes in the dynamo, is there anything else I should be looking at? Fan belt is ok AFAIK, other than furred up connections is there much in the control box or the wiring to it that can be fiddled with successfully, or does the meter reading confirm it's solely the dynamo at fault?

thanks, RJ

Hi Rick,

If by shorting the F and D terminals together on your dynamo you still don't get a charge then brushes should be your next investigation.

If you do get a charge then the control box needs investigation.

Hi Rick. This may contain some useful info.

Way-way back. I had a dynamo that went to zero output, and old guy told me to try "re-flashing" it to get the polarisation back and it worked, simple as that.

Curiously a wiggle of a slightly suspect connection on top of the dynamo, and a few sharp taps on its casing with the handle of a hammer (technical stuff this) and it came back to life.

I've not put a meter over it, but I did a few miles in the car earlier and it seemed ok. Either the dicky connection was causing the problem, or else a brush was sticking and freed off thanks to the gentle attentions of my hammer handle Smile

That has been known to work with self-exciting dynamos (like Lucas), but I am not sure it is any good with (possibly) Bosch.
I do not know what makes are fitted to Volvos.
Jim.
