Hi all
I went out in car yesterday and noticed engine was running a bit rough and making loud rattling!!
Whilst checking things over I took the lead off of number 1 and engine smoothed out and stopped making noise
has anyone got an idea as to what is wrong?
thanks

It sounds like a piston to me. A big end noise will stop when you pull the plug lead, but that shouldn't make the engine run rough |

Could be a lot of things,
has it just started, or getting progressively worse?
it it a knock that gets louder when you give it a slight rev?
it it a tapping noise there all the time?
does it sound from the top or bottom of the engine? _________________ KA

Have been told its most likely head gasket
the noise was blow back through the carb, so head is now off and new gasket on order.
fingers crossed thats all it is |

Too late now to do a compression test.
But any gasket problem causing what you describe should be visible on the old gasket. If not, look further. You will probably be wasting your time and money by fitting a new one and doing nothing else. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

It is funny how some engines have permanent head gasket issues, and others never. I have been a lucky one, even running 8.5 to 1 compression.
Check the gasket to establish where it has blown past, whilst the head is off, get a decent thickness piece of glass, put some valve grinding paste on it, and run the head over it, this will possibly highlight any low areas, if it does, you need to get it skimmed, ideally the block as well.
If you do get the head sorted, put the head-gasket back on, with some decent sealer, I have heard that the heat resistant silicone stands up ok and will help the seal.
Best of luck. _________________ KA

Was this the first time the engine has made this sound? |
