Thanks all for your help. The 12v charger wouldn't start with a bulb in series so I've bought a cheap charger.

Like you, that's the result I rather expected, but still worth a go. Still don't see why a simple battery charger (rather than a conditioner)needs a bunch of electronics though!

Dunno. Maybe it makes them more foolproof and at the same time less reliable. I think the one I've bought is just a transformer and rectifier

Aldi is currently selling a 6/12v battery charger for £13.99. it has an output of approx 3.8A but can be left connected to the battery all the time as it constantly checks the battery voltage and only provides the necessary current required to keep the battery charged. I have one and it's pretty good.
