Does anyone know where I can get a dynamo for a 1937 Morris 8? My dynamo isn't working well and I have had it checked out and it can't be fixed so I need a replacement. Thanks

Hi

There is nothing that can't be fixed in a Morris 8 dynamo, what's wrong with it? Is it a 2 or 3 brush?

Cheers

Dave

I took it to an auto electrician who said that whoever had the car before me had potched with it, the brushes had burnt down so far that the bit they are held in has burnt away as well. Basically he is saying it needs all new insides so it would be better for me to source a new one. Do you know anywhere that sells the parts or the dynamo?

I don't understand how that would happen?

Agree! If the brushes wear away the dynamo will just stop working, if the commutator is worn it may need a skim or at worse case a new armature could be fitted.

Maybe you only need a commutator end bracket. This is where the brushes are 'held'

Maybe this is a case of lack of sympathy and understanding of old machinery?

Could be; most auto electricians under the age of 50 will have had little if any practical experience working on dynamo's.

Is it 6 or 12 volt, I have two 12 volt that are in peices.
One has a damaged shaft were the pully fits, had a pulley break up and it chewed the end of the shaft, and the other needed a new bearing.

As Art said it sounds as if you need a replacement end plate, they are readily available.

What county are you in.

It is a 6 volt one.

Thanks everyone I think I need a new end plate, and a set of brushes.
Does anyone know where I can get them from?

Morgan,

Can it not be repaired? There's not a lot to them. If it's the insulation that is broken look at making new bits from thin plastic. You have to be creative with this hobby and look at being self sufficient. The brush holders are held on with rivets and with care can be drifted out and re-used. Post a picture for the collective wisdom to view if possible.

I presume that the dynamo is a period item with screw terminals and is Lucas. If you answer yes to both I have a new end plate and brushes which I am prepared to part with. Interested? send me a PM
