Great news! my 6 volt starter motor is now a 12 volt starter motor!. The problem is, the bendix is rattling against the ring at speed. I greased it to stiffen it up, but no joy. I stretched the return spring, but no joy.
Anyone any ideas?

Regards
Andrew

Andrew,

I would get rid of the grease. Wash it clean.. With the stretched spring it should be OK If I remember correctly the recommended lubrication was dry graphite.

My six volt starter has always been a twelve volt, I upgraded bulbs coil etc to twelve volt, but did nothing with the starter and it is fine. When under starting load, there is a huge voltage drop to the starter anyway, that is why balasted coils became popular.
I agree with the previous comment, clean all grease and oil from the bendix, get some graphite powder or an old soft pencil and use to lubricate it.
