just acquired a 1920 Varley Woods, and am puzzling how to fit a Brolt starter to the Dorman engine. |

Hi Ranald,
Welcome to the forum.
Would this be you and yours?

Wikipedia has a nice story about the company:
Quote: | Varley founded the The High Speed Tool Company in Acton, London, which in late-1918 changed its name to HS Motors Ltd.[2] HS Motors Ltd built an assembled car in 1918-1919, using Decolonge engines acquired from fellow manufacturer Storey.[2] In mid-1919, unpaid creditors took the company to court, and called-in the bailiffs.[3] The bailiffs arrived at the factory, noted what was of value, and padlocked the premises, stating that if the bills were not paid within seven days, they would return and take everything away to be sold off.[3] Varley and Woods management arrived at the back of the premises with a lorry, and knocked a hole in the wall that was big enough for the lorry to drive through, and removed every item of value[3] The lorry travelled to Wolverhampton, where manufacture recommenced, using chassis sourced from Turner, and Dorman 1794cc engines.[2] The Varley-Woods was launched at the 1919 Motor Show at Olympia. There were three models, a 2-seater, priced at £540, a 4-seater tourer, priced at £660, and a coupé, priced at £760.[3] |

This is indeed the car I have bought (the journalist is not entirely accurate); it was supplied with a Brolt starter as an optional extra, never fitted. The car came to me with the starter in a box, and as I am 75, I would prefer to fit it than swing the handle everytime!
Thanks for the info and adverts. |

Hi Ranald,
Does it simply bolt on to the crankcase or do you need some engineering to modify the starter or crankcase to accept it or possibly make some adaptor to mate the two unmodified?
Perhaps you could post photos of the starter motor and rear engine support. It looks as if there more room on the exhaust side.
