I seem to building up quite a collection of these cans in an attempt to find 4 or 5 I can use with my Alldays but I'm having difficulty finding out what the date of manufacture is.

I have just bought 3 in great condition with "valor" and "1 5", "5 U" and "3 S" stamped on them. What I've found on the internet is that the date of manufacture is what is stamped but ..... "5 U" etc is not really a date. None of the 3 has either a deposit amount (3/-) on the top or a fuel manufacturer's name.

Any help or advice gratefully accepted.

As far as I know the Valor ones are later than those from the 20s and 30s with the fuel brand pressed into the side panels. They initially had (I believe) 3 shillings, then 5 shillings on the top, later nothing at all. Early ones usually have a two-digit date code on the underside, at least those I have do (probably 50-60 or so now in number Shocked )

rats - I thought the plain ones were earlier!

I have some that are definitely pre WW1 (e.g. Pratts) but they are very battered. I'll spend some time cleaning and repainting these plain ones for regular use. I could even put the A&O logo on them

Post up a few photos, it'd be interesting to see them. There may have been plain early ones, I've not researched them in any great detail, but the plain ones I have are late I'm sure.
