Hi.

I,m Looking to buy a metric tap and die set, Just for my own use in the garage at the house.
Was looking at the 110 US pro set.
And then seen,
Mannesmann tap and die set 110 pcs with a 10 Years Manufacturers Warranty. Surley they must half decent with a 10 year Warranty?.

Anybody had any dealing's with any of these make's or can recommend any other make's that are good and not to expensive?

Cheer's Petrolhead's.

With taps & dies you generally get what you pay for; if they are carbon steel they will be ok for soft materials like brass or aluminium, won't last long on mild steel jobs and probably won't cut stainless steel.

With a set this big you probably will never use 90% of it , so may be better off purchasing a smaller set with the sizes you will use, and then adding as you need different sizes. Google Tracy Tools, they specialise in taps and dies, and have a good reputation supplying the engineering market.

Cheers

Dave

Totally agree with you Dave, You get for what you pay for, And will never use 90% of them.

I would mainly be using them to clean up thread's, when I've got a part of a vehicle at the house. And then discover i have to clean the tread's to get it back on safe with out destroying the thread's.
I live on a island and we don't have a good engineer's tool supplier. Have one or two industrial supplier's but don't have a good selection of taps and die's..

Have sent Tracy tools a e-mail to see if they sell set's, As i see they have a good reputation on other forum's.

Aldi do this at the moment for £14.99

I know its not the best quality but I have a similar one from Lidle and its ideal for cleaning threads.
I tend to buy any taps and dies I see at car boot sales for the more accurate jobs, I feel you could buy this set and then buy better quality for the sizes you use the most.
The US pro stuff isn't bad but its not a patch on Presto etc
