Back in the 80's when Wham and Maddona dominated the charts I was 17 and had just past my driving test...I was offerd a Bedford CA for £90, the bloke selling it worked for the Post Office and oddly enough it had been brush painted in "pillar box red" and just in case I ever wanted to repaint it, he gave me a tin with another 10l of the paint! it also came with a spare 4 speed box that he had never to round to fitting (CA's had a 3 speed box as standard)
I ran it for a year, until its MOT, which it failed, I then went off to Uni, and by the time I got home fro Christmas, my dad had given it to the scrap man
I allways said that I'll get another and that day was today
Bedford CA's are pretty thin on the ground, and even thinner if you don't want a camper or ice cream van ! so when this one came up I couldn't refuse
It was bought new by a green grocer in Skegness, used for 20 years, parked in a garage in 1987, then brought back to life in 2014/15 by a couple who own a CA Camper Van, all sound although it was their first attemp at a re-spray, so the paint reqires some flattening and possibly re applying in some areas, but from a distance the van looks very respectible and with 12 months MOT is very usable...odd for me to buy something usable !!
It still has the original number plates, that bears the Bedford dealers name:
So this will be a usable rolling improvement project !
Cheers

Excellent, and is it going to get the obligatory scruffy mattress in the back, for a full "relive the misspent youth" scenario.......... |

Very nice too.
The Bedford CA is one commercial I have not driven but the local joiner and undertaker had an early split screen model with the painted grille for years in the 1960s.
Because he was a fastidious man he kept it in spotless condition. It was dark grey IIRC.
He replaced it in about 1968 with a dark blue "C" registered example. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Not a bad drive as far as I can remember, although I did once have a door fall off when taking a sharp right hand turn, it somehow came unhooked at the bottom and swung out like a spaniel's ear!
Embarrassing but gave the people in a bus going the other way, a laugh. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Certainly not a common sight, seen a few campers but not many panel vans. Well done of preserving her, she looks and sounds really good. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Observant members may have noticed that there were a couple of bits missing on the grill of my CA....they are are straigt parts about 6" long that sit on each side of the grill...any way the good news is that I obtained a pair..the not so good news was at they were attached to this:
It was rolling on 4 wheels as we started to winch it on to my trailer, but alas the entire rear quickly disappeared
I recovered a few other oily bits and then weighed the remains in for the princely sum of £12.80!

Very nice! but why did you weigh the second one in? you could have tarted it up with the 10l of red paint and advertised it on eBay as a barn find/ abandoned restoration project! |

A very nice van Dave. We had a few diesel ones in the Royal Mail but they were not as reliable as the J4. Is yours petrol or diesel?. They were easy to work on if I remember but it was nearly 50 years ago. Hope you have plenty of enjoyment with it. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |
