It's always been an ambition of mine to enter the world of pre-war cars, or post vintage thoroughbreds if you prefer and I've just acquired this beautiful Lagonda. I feel there's a certain synergy with my Aston which it will join in the garage. To say I'm excited is an understatement. It's a 1933 Lagonda 16/80 Special Six T7 Tourer to give it it's full name (16hp and 80mph not that I'll be doing that in a car that's over 80 year old!). Like Astons of that era it has the centre throttle and gear selection pattern laid out opposite to the norm with 1-2 to the right and 3-4 to the left, oh and a right hand side gear lever - all good fun!

It was a project for a retired Longbridge (Austin) engineer who methodically restored it over a period of a couple of years about 10 years ago. Sadly at 81 his eyesight is failing and he can no longer drive. Rather than look at it in the garage he preferred to see it go to another enthusiast, me! Very Happy

Sure, it was £80k which I felt was pretty good for an 82 year old Lagonda in excellent condition. I am sure one could find one £5 or £10k less but sometimes you have to strike while the irons hot and she's a beauty.

Beautiful car and much better it be used, enjoyed and seen by others rather than hidden away somewhere.

Will you be able to chauffer the previous owner from time to time ?

Had I purchased it, I may have had to change my OCC user name to "Poor__" something or other Smile

I hope you have many years of enjoyable motoring with it.

Is there a story behind the No plate ? I would have thought it would have had just 1 or 2 letter prefix.

I have to smile at the spare plugs, in fact it was something I fitted on some of my previous vehicles. I never liked the idea of them rolling around in the boot or toolbox

Little point in carrying them in my 2014 Dodge, one has to dismantle a great deal of things from under the bonnet just to see them let alone change them.

(edited so it some sense makes with gooder grammer and sipilling)

I used to have a 1930 Aston with a centre throttle and never had a problem when going from 1 car to another.

If anything I used to initally put the brake on the modern and wonder why it was not moving.

I am sure you will quickly get used to it

Nick

Agreed - after a while a centre throttle seems quite natural. The only time I was caught out was slowly manoevering in reverse on a closed throttle with my foot off the pedals; when I went to stop I went for the middle pedal...

I am now trying to trace the history of my recently acquired 1933 Lagonda 16/80. I only have one buff log book that starts from 1961 when the owner was in Edinburgh so there's a gap of 28 years to fill. The BPA 334 number would have been a Guildford registration. On the internet I came across an article about a number of enterprising brothers who set up motor cycle and motor car dealerships in the Surrey area with a main dealership at 97 High Street Guildford. One can clearly see in this photo they proudly proclaim themselves as Lagonda Cars dealers so I wonder if this was where my car originated?

Does anyone know the history of Jacksons?

Hi Rich.
I see you have been in touch with the Dragon. Did David give you the picture link or the link to the Where is this quiz? If the former you need to look for http://www.guildford-dragon.com/2012/09/10/where-is-this-no-24/

It is interesting that the numbering is quite different compared to what it is now. 97 is now halfway up the hill on the opposite side.

Here is a general view of that part of the street, from the description in the answers to the WiT quiz from which your picture came, it would have been roughly where the couple with the push chair are heading.

Hi Penman, no I had not been in touch with the Guildford Dragon and I had no idea that picture was part of a quiz! Confused

I reached it by searching on the internet for motor dealers in Guildford and came across a book by Marion May, The Freewheeling Jacksons.

http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/local-news/the-freewheeling-jackson-seven-4836135

There is a picture of Jackson's Motor Arcade from 1920s at 97 High Street.

Interesting that the Dragon's article says the numbering has changed because I have been struggling to see how what's there now bears any resemblance to the old picture! Well at least that's one mystery solved.
