Just my opinion, but it's a bit off joining an enthusiasts forum just to post an advert. Unless it's paid for, of course.

Agreed.

I'm getting pretty hacked off with people joining just to plug products, or advertise their sales/wants, as it's clearly stated that the forum doesn't exist for this purpose.

Understandable that it is annoying and time wasting. Maybe the success of the site also brings this kind of problem, one only has to look at the number of non-members viewing the site.
The only suggestions I can make would be an e-mail submission system that sends out a message with conditions that must be agreed to by return.

Or is it time for moderators to lighten the load?

When new members join, I send a joining email with a link to the t&cs regarding advertising and so on, so there's no excuse really.
