I can't see an ID for the car though.

Is the car a Brough Superior also? the strip down the centre of the front wing, matches that shown in other photos of cars I've seen.

Yes, the car is a Brough Superior, circa 1936; looks like an Atcherley drop-head coupe

Yes, it's an Austin Seven engine; it was designed for use exclusively with a sidecar, so the twin rear wheels weren't a handling problem.

Only seven of these were made, I understand, but there was one in excellent condition in the Southward museum when I first came to NZ 22 years ago—I've no idea if it's still there.

so why not build a light car? It seems a silly design, but Broughs have become like holy ikons and are beyond criticism.

You couldn't drive a 4 wheeled car on a motorcycle licence.

Very true! I hadn't looked at it that way. I wonder how the authorities would have assessed it?

Rear wheels with centres less than a certain amount apart (from memory 6", but I stand to be corrected) are considered to be to be one wheel.

That is correct, it is the distance they are apart. I did see a Morgan 3-wheeler that had two rear wheels. It was still classed as a 3-wheeler in the U.K. It was done for competing in trials . It had a ohv wc Blackbourne engine on the front . From memory it was called the Nylander. It was later converted back to 3- wheels , I think.
