Morning all,

Today's "ebay gem" (ahemm) is a forlorn-looking Riley 9 saloon.

Many 9hp and 12hp saloons have been transformed from saloons into specials, in part because to restore a saloon is a very expensive proposition, and also because a well-built special - that could be eligible for pre-war competition use - tends to be much more valuable on completion, than an equivalent saloon (sadly).

It'd be nice to think that this would be restored as a saloon, but looking at the state of it, are there many people out there willing to take it on?

The VSCC are rather more strict on what they will accept now, and specifically say they will not accept a newly-built special which has resulted in the destruction of an original saloon, so perhaps this one has a future... although I suspect there will always be people out there who will be able to circumvent the ban Rolling Eyes

Agreed, from memory no i.d. or reg. no. is mentioned for this particular car, so it could quite well slip through the net.

The relevant paragraphs in their Eligibility Regulations read:

10. Cloning, i.e. one car broken up to make two or more cars is not approved and cars manufactured in this way are not acceptable. It is not acceptable to turn a sports car into a fake Historic Racing Car or a saloon car into a sports or touring car.

and

13. Any person contemplating assembling a car from parts should notify the Committee of the VSCC before starting its construction and should provide a detailed description of its specification. Should the car vary from this specification, the Committee reserves the right to insist on a new application as if the car had not been constructed. It also reserves the right to exclude a car if the final product no longer conforms to the spirit or letter of these regulations. Both while the assembly is in progress and upon completion, the car must be readily available for inspection by any person(s) nominated by the Committee.

I thought the requirement to notify the Committee applied to all newly-built specials rather than just assemblies from parts, but it seems like it wouldn't take much subterfuge to sneak something through Crying or Very sad
