|

New to the list, and I just recceived a 1936 Morris 8 Tourer. But, it has no rear seat. Can anyone send me the measurements of the seat and any pictures of how it is hooked into the car?
Also, my car has what looks like a tow bar area in the rear. Looks very old, and fits in with the rear bumper but I don't know if it was something that could be bought back in the day. Anyone else have one?
Thanks

I thought of some more questions about the rear seat. Is there storage behind the seat? Does the seat fold forward? |

Apologies to Rick if the nature of this response breaks any forum rules or etiquette.
It appears that you're new to Morris ownership, in which case the best advice I can give is that you seriously consider joining the British Morris Register:
http://morrisregister.co.uk/membership/
Your question and the many others you're likely to ask has already been answered on the MR forum, which is accessible only by members and is very active, with specialised knowledge and advice from long-standing Morris owners. Just recently I've posted much of the information and pictures you need in response to a similar query.
There is also a technical section containing articles that give detailed advice on various maintenance and repair topics, such as which oils are recommended, how to deal with oil leaks, best method for torquing cylinder heads, and so on.
In the past I've posted extensive information on this (OCC) forum in response to similar queries, but it's a duplication of effort I'd prefer to avoid when dealing with specialised topics such as this.
I'm confident you'll find a MR subscription is money well spent, the more so if you're resident in Britain.

If you look down the postings on the forum you will find a lot of useful information and pictures e.g. Morris 8/40 restoration.
I suspect the "tow bar gear" is a luggage carrier as tow bars were extremely rare on Morris 8's. |

I have sent in my membership to the MOrris register but have not been accepted yet. I am in the USA so there are not many Morris 8 here.
I have read most of the topics on Morris 8 on this Forum, but I did not see answers to my rear seat question.
As to the luggage rack/ tow. It is probably both, but it is set up for towing which would be strange for such a low HP car.

Hopefully you'll find some useful info here without resorting to other forums (do they exist!???? )
Welcome aboard by the way.

Be patient. Like all such clubs it's run by volunteers who give a great deal of personal time for the benefit of members. Also make allowances for time zone differences. We have a number of Eight owners in the US.
Back in the 'sixties there were members who towed small, lightweight caravans with the Eight, though it's not something I'd enjoy. One or two such outfits still turn up at major rallies.
Is your car an export model with 16" wheels? Or left-hand-drive? Do you know its history?

I joined the morris register and set up the Direct Debit for payment, it appeared in my online banking (and still does).
They didn't take the money and decided that I shouldn't be a member (stopped sending magazines etc) without saying a word to me. Once chased it transpires they changed bank accounts but didn't transfer the DD over.
I decided that if they couldn't be bothered to contact me to say there was a problem - then I didn't want to be a member.
Fortunately the BNMC also covers my car, and they have been fantastic! |

My tourer was brought back from England by a couple who is now in their late 70s or 80s. They had owned the car for over 50 +years. They bought it to tour England and Scotland. I heard stories of how cold it was in Scotland in that car. And they bought some sheepskins to keep warm. It is right hand drive. Once back in the US it became a ranch car for running errands. Last time it ran was 8 years ago. Last time it was licensed that we can tell is 2000. The color of the car is a yellow/almond with black fenders. I know that they were not made that way and I can tell that the engine compartment is red. The interior is red and seems to have always been red. But the yellowish paint even where chipped does not show another color. The frame and wood is in good shape and I think the car has been stored inside most of its life.
Needs work!

Good to have some background, Jerry. As a 'home market' car it will have the 17" Dunlop Magna wheels with 4.50 x 17" tyres.
The under-bonnet area should be black, with the exception of the underside of the bonnet which is the same colour on both sides. Upholstery colour matched that of the body, except for the rare black option which had a red interior. Standard colours were red, green, and blue, all fairly dark shades as was the norm in the 'thirties, all with black wings. I've never seen an all-black example except in the brochure.
Have you any pictures? Here's a couple of mine.

I have not given up on the pictures, but so far they have not worked. My son in law says I need to use a different host, so I will work on that.

This is a picture of Morris 8 Tourer seats. Cannot remember how seat was attached to the car but probably nothing much. The back may have had a couple of pins that slipped into holes in the floor. There was no space behind the seat back as I recall.

To judge from the sidescreen peg socket in the top of the door and various other details this is surely an Australian-bodied example. The framed rear window was not a feature of British Tourer hoods. The front seats are not from a Tourer but Saloon seats.
On Morris-bodied Tourers there is quite a lot of space behind the rear seat. That's where the sidescreens are stored when not in use, and the hood bag when the hood is up. That leaves enough space for quite a few additional tools and spares, and even a gallon container of oil when touring.

Yes I know it is an Aussie car but Jerry is only interested in the back seat and aren't the back seats the same? If not why not upload a picture for him? |

If you remember, Brian, he joined the MR and has access to several established forum threads with details and pictures aplenty.
The back seat in your picture is similar but not the same, no doubt due at least in part to body differences. If you've been following the MR thread you'll be aware that we've established Jerry's was originally a home market car but the body has suffered much modification. |
