1970's Spark Plug Tyre Inflator
I'm not sure which one I find more disturbing - the idea of filling a tyre with uncombusted compressed petrol vapour or...
...the really sinister looking Chevy Nova driver!

Not so much chance of a literally explosive blowout with that one..! _________________ Dave (Professional Procrastinator)

I imagine it wouldn't be much use with a 4 cylinder engine unless you were planning on just cranking it over for ages, but I've had plenty of V8s that would happily run with one or more cylinders out of action. Looks like an American advert so I guess it was fine for their engines in the '70s. _________________ Dave (Professional Procrastinator)

As I understand them, the pressure created by the engine's piston is transferred to pressure within the inflator, in such a way that petrol/air mix does not enter the tyre.
If you try one out, and smell the air from the end of the hose, there is no petrol smell.
I have used various ones from time to time, the first over 50 years ago. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

That kind of implies a diaphragm or piston and an inlet valve but there doesn't appear to be either in VC's photo.

About forty years ago, I equipped a Land Rover for a desert expedition in North Africa and one of those tyre inflators was a compulsory piece of kit. As said elsewhere in the thread, it draws in fresh air and does not introduce explosive vapours into the tyre. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

I've had one since I had my first car(no Halfords plug in ones then) & used it on many different sized engines without problems. It still goes in the car even now. Great look on a guys face in the middle of nowhere when I blew up his flat spare tyre - bet he checks it now, cheers,JD _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Always considered them a bit of a challenge for a Jowett twin! |
