After a such a long time I am finally getting round to painting the cab on my Commer lorry.

Epoxy Primer first, I'm going for Rustbuster.
Cellulose Primer next, from Jawel
Cellulose Top coats lastly, from Jawel.

I have already sprayed the inside of the cab with spray cans and that is now in the process of all being masked off.

I have just finished brush painting on 2 coats of primer on the dropside body, its taken ages and is very much like painting the forth bridge!!

I have just noticed that Jawel do their own Epoxy primer so I was wondering if I actually need the 3 stages. Epoxy-Celly primer-celly top coats, could I apply the Cellulose top coats direct on to the flatted Epoxy primer?

Whilst it's easy to order paint online, your local paint supplier will be able to supply all the same stuff, give advise and Because of the high margins in paint, probably chuck in some consumables FOC Smile

Not too happy, I had the paint mixed at a local store for the timber body. I had it mixed to a RAL code so expected it to be at least close to the manufacturers colour swatch. It isn't, its at least a few shades lighter.

I know you can't just go by a chart but a chart should give a very close match at the very least and mixing to a specific RAL number too.

I will give it another coat or two in certain areas to see if it darkens up at all but will have to get paint re-mixed if it doesn't.

Panic over. Paint all mixed to a darker RAL code and all base coats are on and looking great. It goes to show be sure before you proceed.

To belatedly answer the questions above, epoxy primer does not need an intercoat, it will take the cellulose beautifully. Adding cellulose primer just adds work and gives potential for water absorbtion.

For epoxy primers I reccomend Lechler as it is designed for automotive work. I use white and tint to a lighter version of the finishing colour.

The Rustbuster is a more expensive recanning of Jotun, which although splendid, is more intended for marine use and takes a bit more work to sand flat.

With some advice from the local paint supplier and scanning the net I have gone for HB body epoxy primer. It seems to get many similar reviews to the lechler products. I will give it a try and see how it goes.

With some good dry wind free weather at the weekend and after so much prep work I gave it a go spraying the Epoxy Primer undercoats. As a first attempt I am more than happy with the results.

It's neat to see your lorry! There's a fire engine with that style of cab that regularly drives by here, it's been turned into some kind of mobile pizza vending lorry.

Look forward to seeing it come together, perhaps this could become a thread about the Commer - more lorry stories on here would be good Wink

Have given her another couple of coats of primer and finished off the doors and wings too. We have now spent the last couple of weekends flatting it ready for top coats. I have ordered the Coach paint, colour matched to that of the chassis and timber body and that will be here in 2-3 weeks.

Only issue now is that we have lost the decent temperatures so I will have to work out how to heat the workshop.
