2017 SILVERSTONE CLASSIC REVS UP ON REGENT STREET.

World’s biggest classic motor racing festival revs into London
Next year’s Classic launched to 450,000+ show-goers in the capital
Early bird tickets on sale from Saturday 5 November
Special chance to win a money-can’t-buy ‘Golden Ticket’ prize

Remember, remember the 5th of November – that’s when next summer’s Silverstone Classic will be launched with a special display at the Regent Street Motor Show, and when Early Bird tickets go on sale.

With the capital city’s flagship shopping destination closed to through traffic during the day, the prestigious stretch of road between Piccadilly and Oxford Circuses is reserved for a unique automotive showcase. Last year, the free-to-view event attracted a record 450,000 visitors and even more are expected next month, making it the perfect platform to launch the latest edition of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.

By popular demand, the 2017 Silverstone Classic (21-23 July) will once again feature three days of unrivalled entertainment with the biggest entry, the most racing and the best paddock access at any such event, not to mention the massive range of off-track activity.

Adding quality to quantity, all of Europe’s leading historic categories will be on the packed programme, including an incredible Formula 1 grid with iconic Grand Prix cars from the seventies and early eighties, some of which will be displayed on Regent Street. Already confirmed for the show on Regent Street at the beginning of November is an iconic black and gold JPS Lotus which will line-up alongside a number of other much-loved racing classics including a flame-spitting Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Other series’ for the Silverstone Classic next July will include crowd-favourites such as the Group C prototypes and a host of touring, sports and GT cars. Add in more than 10,000 privately owned classic cars displayed by motor clubs, many choosing the Classic to mark major milestones in their chosen marque’s or model’s history, plus air displays, live music concerts from classic rock bands and a host of other family entertainment and it’s easy to see why more than 100,000 visitors of all ages now flock to the world’s premier classic and historic motor racing festival.

As last year, prices for Early Bird adult tickets start from £35 and the cost of the three-day weekend ticket remains at £99. Details of all 2017 ticket prices, as well as hospitality and camping options, will be available on the silverstoneclassic.com website early next month.

Moreover, all those booking on Saturday 5 November will be entered into a special draw giving a chance to win a ‘Golden Ticket’ with benefits ranging from a hot lap around the full Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on the Classic’s Preview Day, to a ride in a course car during the event or even an upgrade to VIP hospitality.

STARS COME OUT FOR MASSIVE CELEBRITY RACE AT SILVERSTONE.

Spectacular new showdown announced on Regent Street.

Theo Paphitis, Heston Blumenthal, Stan Boardman, Dennis Taylor and Neil Primrose ready to race.

Bike legend Wayne Gardner switches to four wheels.

Team captains to include touring car legends Andrew Jordan, Gordon Shedden and Robb Gravett.

Early bird tickets now on sale with significant savings.

Seldom has the phrase ‘star studded’ been more applicable: the packed-programme at next summer’s Silverstone Classic (21-23 July) will provide more than 50 famous faces with the opportunity to race bumper-to-bumper around Britain’s premier Grand Prix circuit.

Prominent personalities that have already confirmed their intention to compete include celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, comedian Stan Boardman, Dragon’s Den TV star Theo Paphitis, snooker icon Dennis Taylor and Neil Primrose, drummer for double BRIT winning band Travis. Bike racing world champion Wayne Gardner will also be switching to four wheels for this very special showdown.

In keeping with the event’s prominence as the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, these luminaries will all be racing flat-out in a huge grid of identical Austin A35 saloons from the late fifties. Celebrities will split into teams representing their professions – for example chefs, TV, sport and music – and each team will be mentored by a renowned racing driver. British Touring Car champions Gordon Shedden, Robb Gravett and Andrew Jordan have already signed up to captain three of the teams.

The competition itself will be split into two parts. Owners of these charismatic, race-prepared A35s will qualify on Friday and race on Sunday with the celebrities together with their team captains in action on Saturday.

“We have included celebrity races in the past at the Silverstone Classic but never before on this epic scale – it’s going to be an exciting and popular addition to what’s already an amazing weekend of entertainment for all the family,” enthused Nick Wigley, CEO of event organiser Goose Live Events. “This must be the biggest opportunity ever for so many celebs from lots of different fields to compete against each other on a racetrack. We put the word out a couple of weeks ago and the response already has been fantastic – everyone seems to be scrambling for their 2017 diaries!”

The star-studded showdown was officially launched on Saturday (5th November) at the Regent Street Motor Show where the buzzing Silverstone Classic stand featured three of the racy A35s that are being added to the bill at next summer’s extravaganza.

The cars are well-known in classic racing circles and were introduced a few years ago by the Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC) as a cost-effective route into historic racing. More than 50 have now been built, guaranteeing an enormous grid – not to mention some unmissable enjoyment for contestants and crowds – come next July.

Early Bird tickets for the 2017 Silverstone Classic have just gone on sale with – as last summer – prices for adult tickets starting from £35 and the cost of the three-day weekend ticket remaining at £99. Details of all 2017 ticket prices, as well as hospitality and camping options are now available on the Silverstone Classic website.

Revised date for the 2017 Classic:

---

REVISED DATE FOR 2017 SILVERSTONE CLASSIC.

Change necessary after British Grand Prix date switch.

World’s largest classic motor racing festival now set for 28-30 July.

Full refunds available for ticket-holders now unable to attend.

With the FIA World Motor Sport Council ratifying a revised date for the British Grand Prix, next summer’s Silverstone Classic is now confirmed for the weekend of 28-30 July 2017 – a week later than the provisional date originally announced.

The UK’s round of the Formula One World Championship had initially been set for Sunday 9 July but, with the German Grand Prix no longer on the 2017 F1 calendar, the British event has now been rescheduled for Sunday 16 July.

The massive operational complexities involved in the organisation of the two major international events – both attracting more than 100,000 visitors – make it impossible for Silverstone to host its two most popular annual attractions on consecutive weekends.

“We’re sorry to have to make this change but, unfortunately, it’s due to factors outside of our control,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of Silverstone Classic organiser Goose Live Events.

Tickets already purchased for the 2017 Silverstone Classic will be valid for the revised dates, while ticket-holders now unable to attend due to the date change have until 28 February to request a full refund. Details of this process have been emailed to those who have already taken advantage of the Early Bird ticket offer.

Early Bird tickets for the 2017 Silverstone Classic are on sale, with prices for adults starting from just £35 and the cost of the three-day weekend ticket remaining at £99, making them a great Christmas gift. Details of all ticket prices, as well as hospitality and camping options are now available on the silverstoneclassic.com website.

Full information about the 2017 Silverstone Classic entertainment programme – including more exciting new races, special car club celebrations and live music performers – will be announced in the coming weeks.

GOLDEN GRIDS TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF FORMULA FORD.

-Special races at 2017 Silverstone Classic to mark major milestone
-Record 54-car grids to celebrate 50 years of Formula Ford
-Entry-level formula which launched future World Champions
-Early Bird tickets now on sale with significant savings

The world’s most famous proving ground for future champions, Formula Ford, turns 50 in 2017 – a golden milestone that will be celebrated in record-breaking style at next summer’s Silverstone Classic (21-23 July).

To mark this prominent 50th anniversary, the packed programme at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival will include two special showdowns for Historic Formula Fords in 2017. It’s the first time the hugely popular, entry-level single-seaters have featured on the Classic bill since 2013 and a pair of unsurpassed, full-capacity 54-car grids are expected to serve up a feast of close and exciting racing, a hallmark of the junior formula ever since its game-changing introduction in July 1967.

Back then, the combination of low-cost, lightweight tubular chassis powered by a 1600cc Ford Cortina GT engine made an immediate impact both with rival constructors and the next generation of young drivers eager to impress.

Formula Ford quickly became the first stepping-stone in the early careers of many prospective Formula One drivers. World Champions such as James Hunt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jody Scheckter, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jenson Button all cut their formative teeth in the super-competitive world of Formula Ford.

Over the past 50 years, Silverstone has witnessed hundreds of spectacular Formula Ford showdowns, with the circuit’s high-speed layout producing some epic slipstreaming duels between young protagonists. Next summer, the Silverstone Classic will recreate some of those memorable battles when Historic Formula Fords will be among the many on-track highlights.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Formula Ford back to the Classic in 2017 for what will be its biggest 50th anniversary celebration,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of event organiser Goose Live Events. “Formula Ford has played such a major role, in both global motor sport history and the careers of just about every young racing driver, that it has earned its place in history. What’s more, it’s going to be another real crowd-pleaser, with lots of incredible wheel-to-wheel action – something for which Formula Ford racing has always been renowned.”

The two Formula Ford showdowns will line-up alongside those races already confirmed on the 2017 Silverstone Classic bill: Group C prototypes; FIA Masters Historic Formula One and FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars; the International Trophy for Classic GT Cars (Pre ’66); the Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre ’61 Sportscars; the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre ’56 Sportscars; the JET Super Touring Car Trophy; the Maserati Trophy for HGPCA Pre ’66 Grand Prix Cars and, of course, the recently announced HRDC Austin A35 Celebrity Race.

In addition, organisers are pleased to announce the return of the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars (Pre ‘63 GT), Under 2-Litre Touring Cars and Formula Junior to next year’s race programme with more exciting races still to be announced.

Ensuring all visitors can savour the spectacle, the Formula Ford contests will be staged across both Saturday and Sunday and will star cars built and raced before 1972, as featured in the HSCC’s popular Historic FF1600 Championship.

“These are cars from the glorious early years of Formula Ford and they never fail to deliver timeless and thrilling single-seater racing,” said Grahame White, CEO of the HSCC. “Even though we are permitted to start grids of 54 cars on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, we are still expecting to be over-subscribed, such will be the demand to be part of these wonderful races to acclaim 50 years of famed Formula Ford.”

SILVERSTONE CLASSIC ROARS INTO LONDON.

- Big display confirmed for inaugural HMI show at ExCeL
- Eye-catching collection of iconic historic racing cars on display
- The Scarf & Goggles pub pops up, serving Silverstone Real Ale

The world’s biggest classic motor racing festival is coming to London, with confirmation that the Silverstone Classic (28-30 July) will be on pole position at next month’s inaugural Historic Motorsport International, staged at ExCeL from 23-26 February.

Highlighting the sheer scale and far-reaching appeal of the annual Classic, the mammoth meeting’s presence in the capital will be substantial. The extensive display will not only be one of the largest within the new HMI show but will also be a real magnet for the tens of thousands of thirsty visitors and exhibitors as the legendary Scarf and Goggles pub makes a guest appearance at the social centre of the whole event.

Come the final weekend in July, the vast Silverstone estate will be overflowing with attractions, activities, displays, car clubs, entertainment, shops, aviation and live music at a vast three-day event where the racing is only one magical part of the full story.

That said, the unrivalled on-track action remains right at the Classic’s heart and brings together all of the finest historic classes in Europe. With more than 1,000 entries – the biggest for any classic race meeting on the planet – the sizeable showcase at ExCeL will feature a handful of the evocative grids racing as part of the schedule at this summer’s packed Silverstone Classic.

Iconic race cars that are regulars to the Classic that have already been confirmed for display at HMI include a scarlet 1960 Ferrari Dino 246 – an example of the final front-engined car to win a Grand Prix – an iconic JPS Lotus 87 DFV-powered F1 car from the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship, the Ross Brawn Jaguar XJR14 Group C prototype which holds the Silverstone Classic lap record plus a standout pre-war Bentley from the eye-catching Kidston Trophy grid. These will be joined by one of the Austin A35s that, come July, will be raced by star-studded teams of professionals and celebrities.

Illustrating the full scale of the Classic, a large screen will broadcast highlights of last year’s record-breaking event while show-goers will be able to enjoy a pint of Silverstone Real Ale at the legendary Scarf & Goggles pub – the popular destination for refreshments on the JET Village Green at the Silverstone Classic – which will help show-goers enjoy a real flavour of the Classic at HMI.

“This wonderful opportunity to bring the Silverstone Classic to London was just too good for us to ignore,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of Silverstone Classic organiser Goose Live Events. “Hats off to Brand Events for launching this exciting new Historic Motorsport International alongside the flourishing London Classic Car Show at ExCel. The appeal of classic motor sport has never been greater, and we are certain that all those coming to the show will be excited by all that the Silverstone Classic has to offer.”

CAR CLUB NUMBERS TOP THE MAGICAL TON IN RECORD TIME.

A century of clubs already confirmed for 2017 Silverstone Classic
GAZ 21 club from Russia is the 100th to join this summer’s party
Major anniversary celebrations for Lotus 7 and Ferrari Owners’ Club
Early Bird tickets on sale until the end of March

There may be six months remaining on the countdown to this summer’s eagerly-anticipated Silverstone Classic (29-31 July), but already more than 100 car clubs have registered to be part of the spectacular infield displays – one of the major attractions at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.

What’s more, underlining the massive three-day event’s ever-increasing popularity, this year’s century has been topped in record time – three weeks earlier than in 2016, which itself was a record!

In recent years, around 10,000 privately-owned classics have been on show right at the heart of the extravaganza, providing visitors with a huge showcase of much-loved motoring history. Now, with clubs signing up faster than ever before, this year’s sparkling showcase could be the biggest and best yet.

Many of those attending not only take advantage of the special display packages on offer but also choose the high-profile Silverstone Classic to pay passionate homage to key marque and model milestones with dedicated displays and track parades. In recent years, the event has staged a number of record-breaking tributes including Aston Martin’s 100th birthday, 50-year celebrations for three of the world’s greatest sportscars – the Ford Mustang, E-type Jaguar and Porsche 911 – as well as 25 years of the Ferrari F40 supercar.

Notable automotive anniversaries being honoured this July are the 60th birthday of Colin Chapman’s iconic Lotus 7 and 50 years since the Ferrari Owners’ Club was founded in 1967. Both of these significant landmarks are very well supported, with significant numbers already registered from respective club memberships.

Aptly, the 100th club registering for this year’s Classic is also honouring its history – moreover, it is also one of the growing number of clubs travelling from Europe and even further afield to be part of the annual blockbuster show at the Home of British Motor Racing. Full scale production of the GAZ M21 Volga commenced in the Soviet Union during 1957, and the GAZ 21 Club (photo below third row right) is coming all the way from Russia to mark the birth of what was – at the time – the biggest and most luxurious car officially sold to customers in the USSR.

Whatever their marque or model, all car clubs are invited to be part of the incredible Silverstone Classic spectacle. Registration is absolutely free and gives members of attending clubs access to fantastic deals that include two adult admission tickets plus a privileged infield vehicle display pass, allowing attendees to park their pride and joy on the club’s designated stand right at the heart of the event.

“It’s no surprise that more and more car clubs are now making the Classic their main national event, as the sheer scale of their wonderful displays is itself one of the festival’s major attractions,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of Silverstone Classic organiser Goose Live Events. “That more than 100 have already signed up before the end of January is great news for all those coming to Silverstone in July. With so much to see, the Silverstone Classic is the ultimate annual celebration of classic cars for enthusiasts and their families to enjoy.”

Those wanting to experience this tremendous celebration of motoring through the ages can take advantage of Early Bird tickets which are available until the end of March. Adult admission starts from just £35 and the cost of the three-day weekend ticket has been frozen at £99 if purchased before the end of March. Family tickets, camping and VIP Hospitality packages are also available whilst car club packages are on sale until the end of May. All tickets must be booked in advance of the event.

GOLD STARS JOIN CELEBRITIES RACING AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC.

Olympic gold medallists Jason Kenny and Amy Williams on the grid
England cricket captain Mike Gatting joins star-studded cast
Latest line-up of team captains includes F1 racer Mark Blundell
Early Bird tickets now on sale with significant savings

Three more high-profile personalities have been added to the ‘star-studded’ grid set to contest the world’s biggest celebrity motor race at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July). The latest additions are two of Britain’s stand-out Olympic gold medallists – Jason Kenny CBE (main and middle below) and Amy Williams MBE (top below) – and former England test cricket captain Mike Gatting OBE.

The famous three will be part of an illustrious 50-car grid – all will be racing identical Austin A35 saloons harking back to the late fifties.

Luminaries already confirmed include comedian Stan Boardman, Dragon’s Den TV star Theo Paphitis, snooker icon Dennis Taylor and Neil Primrose, drummer for double BRIT winning band Travis. Bike racing world champions Wayne Gardner and Freddie Spencer are also switching to four wheels for this very special showdown.

Together with fellow track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, Kenny is the joint holder of the highest number of Olympic gold medals for a British athlete. As well as winning six gold medals, both have also enjoyed some motor racing success. Hoy originally had been hoping to join Kenny on the grid at Silverstone but had to withdraw when the event’s July date was revised.

Williams also has some previous motor sport experience. Since becoming the first British individual gold medallist at the Winter Olympics for 30 years when winning the skeleton at Vancouver in 2006, she has twice contested Wales Rally GB as a co-driver. Gatting’s on-track form is somewhat less proven but his cricketing achievements are well-known having captained the England test team between 1986-1988.

Once the final list of celebrities is confirmed, they will split into teams representing their professions – for example TV, sport and music – and each team will be mentored by a renowned racing driver. With the Classic’s date change now precluding some of the previously announced team captains from the British Touring Car Championship, a new roster has been engaged. These now include F1 stars Mark Blundell and Martin Donnelly as well as touring car legends Steve Soper and Robb Gravett and renowned sportscar aces Alex Brundle and Darren Turner.

The competition itself will be split into two parts. Owners of these charismatic, race-prepared A35s will qualify on Friday and race on Sunday with the celebrities together with their team captains in action on Saturday.

The cars are well-known in classic racing circles and were introduced a few years ago by the Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC) as a cost-effective route into historic racing. More than 50 have now been built, guaranteeing this enormous grid – not to mention some unmissable enjoyment for contestants and crowds – come July.

“We are thrilled that stars of this calibre are eager and enthusiastic to go racing at the Silverstone Classic,” enthused Nick Wigley, CEO of Silverstone Classic organiser Goose Live Events. “What’s more, we have some more big names – including at least three further Olympic gold medallists – to announce soon.”

Hi all,

Today a media preview for this year's Classic was held at Silverstone, coinciding with a testing day for cars representative of those that'll be appearing at the July event.

Out in large numbers were the A30s and A35s of the HRDC Racing Academy series, although not to be outdone there were many other cars out on track and in the paddock area, representing various race series to balance things out. A number of clubs were also in attendance.

All in all a very interesting day, with various racing and TV personalities to be seen, circulating around the cars that many of them would be competing in.

Below are 100 photos from earlier today .....

SPECIAL ‘DOUBLE WHAMMY’:

RACES TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF THE LEGENDARY FORD SIERRA RS500.

Twin race with two grids provides twice the tin-top entertainment
Group A plus Group 1 field lines up alongside Super Tourers
Cosworths, M3s, Capris, Rovers, CSLs, Camaros, RX7s, GTVs…
Victorious 24 Hours of Spa team reunited for Classic showdowns
BTCC star Karl Jones back in the RS500 hot-seat.

This summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July) will celebrate the Ford Sierra RS500’s 30th birthday with two very special double-header races.

For the first time ever both JET Super Touring Car Trophy showdowns taking place on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons of the Classic will feature not one, but two stellar grids racing simultaneously. The first will be filled with high-tech Super Tourers, the second with Group 1 and Group A racing saloons, including a large number of legendary RS500s.

The focus on the famed RS500 – the competition version of the original Sierra RS Cosworth – is highly significant, too, as the all-conquering turbocharged winged icon was first launched in July 1987 and thus is celebrating its 30th anniversary milestone at the Classic.

In total, the amazing and unprecedented line-up will feature more than 50 iconic entries spanning more than 25 years of glorious touring car racing history, all still displaying their evocative period liveries. There will be Group 1 Capris and Rover Vitesses from the late seventies and early eighties, Group A favourites such as the mighty RS500 and impressively rapid BMW M3s from the late eighties plus, of course, the more extreme Super Tourers from the nineties.

After what promises to be a hectic joint qualifying session on Friday, the field then will be split into two individual grids for the weekend’s pair of stand-out races. The more modern Super Tourers will line up in front and take the first rolling start. Then, 30 seconds later, the combined Group 1 and Group A grid will flash across the line thus providing spectators with two spectacular showdowns running in parallel on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

“It’s going to be very special and, with so much wonderful tin-top history on track, an amazing experience that no touring car enthusiast would dream of missing,” enthused Nick Wigley, CEO of event organiser, Goose Live Events. “The exciting Super Tourers have always been a big hit with the fans ever since the very first David Leslie Memorial Trophy race at the Classic back in 2009. Now we are doubling the eye-catching entertainment with what’s effectively a second stunning race running at the very same time – even more so, as this ‘second race’ will put the spotlight on the incredible achievements of the rightly idolised RS500.”

Introduced by Ford to put some much-needed sparkle into its humdrum showroom Sierra, the three-door RS500 is rated by many to be the world’s most successful competition car of all times. With its signature whale-tail rear spoiler and Cosworth inspired 500+ bhp power pack, in its era the seminal Sierra was virtually unbeatable totally dominating Group A touring car championships right around the globe.

Perhaps its greatest triumph came at the 24 Hours of Spa in 1989 when Gianfranco Brancatelli, Win Percy and Bernd Schneider took top honours in their Eggenberger Motorsport entered RS500. Today that victorious Bastos liveried car (below middle right) resides in far away New Zealand but it will be coming to Silverstone for a very special reunion at the Classic. Once again, multiple touring car champion Brancatelli will be back behind the wheel and team principal Rudi Eggenberger will be back on the pit wall.

Welsh racer Karl Jones is another reliving his RS500 glory days at Silverstone this summer. Back in the late eighties, he raced a Duckhams branded Sierra (below middle right) in the BTCC, scoring several podium finishes. Come July, Jones will be sharing a drive with Paul Linfoot in the striking Lui liveried RS500, (below middle left) formerly raced successfully in the 1988 German DTM championship by twice Le Mans winner Manuel Reuter.

As befits a 30th birthday party, Brancatelli and Jones will be joined by a number of other notable RS500 revellers. Those already confirmed include Andrew Kirkley in his ex-Laurence Bristow CAM Shipping liveried Sierra, Mark Wright’s iconic Texaco liveried machine plus the yellow Dunlop RS500 as raced in the Japanese Touring Car Championship. More ‘Cossie’ entries are expected, too.

Not only will visitors to the Silverstone Classic witness all these fabulous RS500s in dramatic flame-spitting action out on track but also, thanks to the event’s acclaimed ‘access all areas’ tickets, they will be able to observe the incredible cars close up in the paddock and even meet their renowned drivers.

Diamond Days for the Lotus Seven.

- Colin Chapman’s evergreen classic celebrates 60 years

- Huge track parade of Sevens and Caterham 7s on Saturday

- Anniversaries galore at the Silverstone Classic

- Car club packages available until end of May

The ageless and iconic Lotus Seven will be out in force at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July), celebrating its milestone 60th anniversary with special displays plus a massive track parade on Saturday.

It was back in September 1957 that the very first Seven was delivered to its proud new owner and the small two-seater open-top sportscar has been in continuous production ever since. Only the equally timeless Morgan 4/4 has been around longer.

Designed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, the Seven embodies the legendary ‘simplify, and then add lightness’ philosophy of its ever-innovative creator. The roadster remained in production at Lotus until 1973 when Caterham Cars acquired the design rights following Chapman’s decision to discontinue production of his original diminutive model.

Since then, Caterham has proved itself to be a very worthy custodian. In its loving hands, the second generation Caterham 7 has consistently evolved and improved, continuing to delight enthusiasts around the world with its race car handling and performance.

To mark the deity’s diamond anniversary, the Lotus Seven Club is expecting more than a hundred examples from the last 60 years to adorn its special display at this summer’s Silverstone Classic.

“It promises to be quite a spectacle,” said the Club’s Graham Howard. “We will have the full spectrum of Sevens from early Lotuses to more recent Caterhams and will welcome anyone who shares our passion. As no two Sevens are ever the same, there’s plenty to talk about!”

The busy Lotus Seven Club will be one of many clubs celebrating important motoring milestones at the Silverstone Classic. Other notable automotive anniversaries being honoured this July include 60 years of both the ‘Topolino’ Fiat 500 and Gaz 21, 50 years of the Ferrari Owners Club and AMG Mercedes’ as well as 30 years of the fearsome Ford Sierra RS500.

In total, a record number of more than 120 car clubs will be displaying in excess of 10,000 privately owned classic cars on the Silverstone in-field during the three-day 2017 festival, providing visitors with a huge showcase of much-loved motoring history.

Those wishing to display their classic right at the heart of the event can still take advantage of great value car club packages if booked before the end of May.

JAGUAR XJ220 ROYALTY TO JOIN SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS .

Supercar masterminds Jim Randle and Keith Helfet to head 25th anniversary parade.

Inspirational duo visits Don Law Racing in build-up to Silverstone Classic.

All tickets for the Classic must be purchased in advance.

Special plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the remarkable Jaguar XJ220 at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July) have moved up a gear with confirmation that two of the key inspirational figures behind the sensational supercar, Jim Randle and Keith Helfet, will both be joining the silver jubilee festivities.

As Engineering Director at Jaguar, Randle was the mastermind behind what is still the fastest, most exciting and most expensive road-going Jaguar ever created. Helfet was Jaguar’s senior sports car designer and the brains behind the XJ220’s stunning – and astonishingly ageless – styling.

The two leading lights were recently reunited at Don Law Racing in Staffordshire, the world-renowned family-run organisation that has assumed global responsibility for the XJ220 having taken over the business from JaguarSport. Amazingly, it was the first time either Randle or Helfet had visited Don Law’s thriving enterprise, so it was an emotional experience for all parties. More so, as there were no fewer than 22 XJ220s in situ undergoing various renovations, some amazingly with just delivery mileage on their odometers.

“It’s absolutely extraordinary what Don and his team are doing,” enthused Randle. “To have so many cars here is incredible. They are clearly doing a lovely job.”

Helfet echoed those sentiments: “What Don is doing is fantastic,” he said after casting his eyes around the DLR workshop. “If anything or anybody is maintaining the legacy and the reputation of the 220, it’s him. This is an eye-opener and really heart-warming for me.”

Law, who will be curating the record display and parade at Silverstone in July, was every bit as thrilled to have such XJ220 royalty on his premises.

“It was an absolute privilege and honour to have Jim and Keith visit us,” he confirmed. “The XJ220 is very much their brainchild, and that the car is still so admired today, is a true tribute to their incredible vision. I know all the XJ220 owners and enthusiasts coming to the Classic will really treasure their presence at the event. The car has an incredible story to tell and, who better to tell it than the two men who made this incredible project possible.”

Indeed, the story behind the most extraordinary car ever to bear the Jaguar name is well worth sharing. Believing Jaguar needed something very iconic to rebuild its tarnished image, Randle set out to create a Group B supercar to take on the combined might of Ferrari and Porsche. However, with limited resources at his disposal, he was forced to seek a team of a dozen unpaid volunteers willing to work after hours and at weekends.

Famously known as the ‘Saturday Club’, this small team created the sensational XJ220 concept car which was unveiled to rapturous applause at the NEC Motor Show in October 1988. Jaguar was inundated with blank cheques as more than 1,500 enthusiasts and speculators clamoured to get their hands on of one these gorgeous V12-propelled show-stoppers. A response that forced Jaguar to grant approval for a limited production run of 350 road cars.

A dedicated JaguarSport joint venture was set up with the company’s then competition partner, Tom Walkinshaw Racing, and soon afterwards the fairytale continued with HRH The Princess of Wales opening a brand new XJ220 factory in Bloxham near Banbury.

When customer sales started in June 1992 (hence this year’s 25th birthday celebrations) the dramatically-styled, mid-engined, two-seater supercar – priced at a not inconsiderable £400,000 plus VAT – was not only Jaguar’s fastest ever production car but also the fastest production car on earth, officially clocked at a then peerless 212.3mph.

At this point, though, the story took a turn for the worse. The world was heading into economic recession and many of those bowled over by the original prototype weren’t quite so excited by the downgraded specification of the eventual production car.

Although originally conceived to feature a V12 engine plus four-wheel-drive, the customer version came with a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 – albeit developing a sizable 542bhp – delivered to just the rear transaxle.

In the end, when production ceased in 1994 with just 281 cars built, Jaguar was left with 150 unwanted XJ220s many of which were eventually sold off for less than half of their list price.

However, now 25 years on, the XJ220 is starting to be respected by motoring aficionados and serious collectors alike. Prices are rising fast and, with no little thanks to those custodians at Don Law Racing, the ultimate Jaguar is starting, rightly, to be acclaimed as one of the world’s significant supercars.

“It does seem the world is rediscovering the 220,” confirmed Helfet. “I believe the special anniversary parade at the Classic will not only be a very memorable occasion but also a major turning point in the 220’s turbulent history. There’s still so much interest and goodwill in the car. Looking back, it was the craziest, the most heroic and even the silliest of projects. However, 25 years on, I’m still very proud of it.”

Randle remains a firm believer that the V12 route would have produced a better result, but he is pleased that Helfet and other members of his small volunteer team are getting the recognition they deserved. He’s delighted, too, that the surviving members of the Saturday Club are being invited to share in the celebrations.

“It’s incredible how fast 25 years have passed,” he reflected. “My memories are mostly quite happy, as much for the people involved as anything else. It was for them a life experience and I’m sure they’d all be very happy to know that 25 years on the car is still putting smiles on people’s faces.”

Fans wishing to be part of these notable record-breaking XJ220 celebrations must purchase tickets in advance. Adult admission starts at £43 and weekend camping and hospitality upgrades are available. All tickets provide access to racing paddocks, trackside grandstand seating, live music concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings featuring the Bootleg Beatles and Tony Hadley formerly of Spandau Ballet, vintage funfair rides, air shows and car club displays as well as a host of other family-friendly demonstrations, activities and entertainment.

McLaren Back on Pole Position at Silverstone Classic .

-Biggest-ever gathering of McLaren road cars
-Marking what would have been Bruce McLaren’s 80th year
-Special Sunday parade to be led by Amanda McLaren
-All tickets for the Classic must be purchased in advance

Next month’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July) will pay special tribute to racing legend Bruce McLaren – one of the greatest names in motor sport history.

Although the New Zealander (photo above and top below) won Le Mans, two Can-Am titles and four Grands Prix before tragically losing his life aged just 32 in an accident when testing a sportscar at Goodwood in 1970, it is as a racing car constructor that he is best remembered – and where the McLaren name lives on.

The history books show that the team he founded has won no fewer than 20 F1 World Championships – 12 for drivers, eight for constructors – and 182 Grands Prix. McLaren cars have also won Le Mans and the Indy 500.

Today’s company is also a prolific maker of GT road cars and to mark what would have been Bruce McLaren’s 80th year, the McLaren Owners Group has organised what will be the largest-ever gathering of McLaren road cars in the same place at the same time.

The initial plan was to gather together 80 McLaren road cars, to include cars from the 1992 F1 via the P1 hypercar (photo bottom right) through to the latest 570GT (photo bottom left), but the event has proved so popular that, to date, 117 cars have registered.

And leading the parade, which is scheduled for Sunday 30 July, will be another McLaren in a McLaren – Bruce’s daughter Amanda, his only child, who was just four years old when he lost his life. Today, Amanda is a McLaren Brand Ambassador.

She said: “I am very excited to be attending the McLaren Owner Group’s national event at the Silverstone Classic, celebrating what would have been my father's 80th year. His dream to build road cars began with his prototype M6GT and has now been realised by the cars McLaren Automotive is producing. I am looking forward to seeing so many of these cars in one place, knowing how proud my father would have been.”

Jeff Vaudrey, administrator of the McLaren Owners Group, said: “Since our inception 18 months ago, the McLaren Owners Group has grown rapidly with more than 250 members across the UK, many of whom will be joining us for the largest-ever gathering of McLaren road cars in one place. We are excited to be joined by Amanda McLaren to pay tribute to her father with a spectacular track parade at the Silverstone Classic.”

The McLaren parade is the latest in a long line of record breaking one-make or one model parades at the annual festival of classic motoring and motor sport. The 25th anniversary of the remarkable Jaguar XJ220 will be celebrated on Saturday this year (29 July) with a notable cavalcade of the ultra-rare two-seat 200+ mph supercar.

Previous parades include another 25th birthday tribute to the incredible Ferrari F40 back in 2012, when 60 cars circulated the Grand Prix circuit. In 2011, 767 Jaguar E-types celebrated the model’s 50th anniversary while two years later another 50th birthday was marked when an incredible 1,208 Porsche 911s took to the circuit.

These magnificent track pageants are just one aspect of the Silverstone Classic weekend. Track action will see more than 20 races and demonstrations with entries from more than 1,000 historic racing cars of all shapes and sizes including F1 cars of all eras, sports and GT cars from the 1950s and 1960s, Group C Le Mans racers, pre-war sports cars, touring cars and GP Bike Legends.

Other action includes air shows, classic car auctions, displays from over 120 car clubs, a vintage fun fair and a shopping village and much more.

The ‘rocking and racing’ weekend also includes live concerts with tribute acts including The Bootleg Beatles, Who’s Next and Are You Experienced? playing the music of the Beatles, the Who and Jimi Hendrix on Friday evening while Tony Hadley formerly of Spandau Ballet fame will be headlining on Saturday with a performance from The Dire Straits Experience, too.
