Actually not at all bad.

In 1951 there were 362 cars entered. 337 started. 281 finished.
In 1952 there were 369 cars entered 328 started. 163 finished.

Most of those that arrived later were more sophisticated pieces of machinery.

Unfortunately the FIA historic database doesn't go back that far however it's a useful source of information:

found a bit of information in the june 1993 issue of "the sidevalve new's" about the steve minns monte carlo rally car,
not a lot of mod's really,

8hp head,
std carb,
fast road cam,
lightened flywheel,
balanced crank/rod's/piston's,
smith's friction water pump,
4jx16 E83W pick-up wheel's with 6.00 x 16 town & country tyre's,

that's about it,

That's interesting, I'm planning engine out this winter, fast road cam, probably the 8hp head I've got, bit of port polishing and grind valves in. Twin su's on aquaplane manifold. Aquaplane exhaust manifold. Crank balance if I can find the fella who used to do all the race car engines around here. He sold up and moved but I've been to his place and just need to remember how to get there.

not sure how "steve minns" fared in the rally, have to look through some more SVN mag's i bought off ebay, not really sure what a "smith's friction waterpump" is though,
recon the balancing of the engine component's helped a lot, if i had a spare engine i'd like to do the same, balance etc, in the future, maybe,

Some exported Pops were fitted with a water pump like that as standard, in the UK it was only ever an extra-cost option iirc.

Ah yes good point, I should have remembered that too as I've one in the garage.
