What do you listen to while you are driving your modern or classic vehicle?

I cannot listen to anything in the Land Rover Series 2a because the noise of the 200tdi diesel engine would overcome any ICE. I've been saying for years that I'm going to attempt to add some soundproofing but it's still on the "to do" list although I have bought suitable materials.

In everything else I listen only to Radio 4. There is no DAB reception in the Conwy Valley and the frequency changes twice in 18 miles.
I have a period Radiomobile 5 push button radio in the Mark 2 and Radio 4 is still available on long wave.

The sound systems in both moderns and my daily drive Land Rover Defender are all beyond my comprehension but I have managed to find Radio 4 in all of them, somehow.

The Lancaster does not have a radio, the Minx has an appropriate age MW/LW valve radio so very limited to what can picked up. In my modern I listen to Absolute radio or CD's. A friend of mine -Tony Mason- plays in a band and I do enjoy their music.

Wow!

its Radio 2 in my modern daily, when im out and about in the singer I have a lovely Motorola set that has been restored and has the added bonus of being able to connect to my ipod, so all sorts of 1960s and 70s music gets played.

I once drove round Goodwood with a chap called Nick Mason who claimed to be in a band - he must have been an imposter... Wink

Music in my cars? None in my Riley as I like to be able to hear every little rattle and squeak - and the brmm-brmm of its one and three-quarter inch exhaust.

My 'moderns' ? The same applies. I prefer to hear engine sounds, even if one of them is a four-pot, non-turbo 1.6 diesel. I've owned my other 'modern', a 2003 4.2L A8 for several years and haven't yet found out where the CD changer is; boot or glove box I imagine. I drove it yesterday for the first time in thirteen months; you can't beat a V8, even if it is muffled by a factory exhaust - kick down, floor it, whoo-hoo...!

Ha ha you are quite right Nick Mason, although I do know Tony Mason but not as well, both from when I worked for Audi Motorsport. The association with Tony obviously from a professional angle and Nick, as I'm sure most of you are aware, from his love of cars. He had a house not far from where the Audi workshops were and used to spend a lot of time there and in turn I used to go to his house and help, advise and drool over his broad collection of vehicles. He has long since moved away but we stay in touch from time to time.

I've got a fairly basic Sony radio/cassette in the Firenza, which came to me out of an old company car that we traded in against something else. It's best feature is that it can be equipped with a remote control "stalk" that allows me to turn it on and, most importantly, alter the volume, from a comfortable position.

Despite being introduced long after car radios were a thing, the Viva HC dashboard has no provision for one, so the fitting position is generally in a "pod" mounted under the bottom of the dash. When transitioning from A-road to motorway, though, a sharp increase in volume is required, and I'm not comfortable reaching down that far to find the buttons to do so. The remote is perfect for that.

This year, though, it won't tune into any radio stations, I've checked the aerial and cable and that seems all fine. So it seems I'll have to do something more proper to sort it out which might involve spending some money.

For several years after it was rebuilt, I didn't have a radio so that I could listen out for any strange noises. All of a sudden though this starts to get quite boring. I'm not sure I've missed it since it failed, though.

I'm very boring. I have no radios of any sort in my oldies. I would probably have a job to get 6v units anyway.

The newer cars have whatever they were supplied with when new. I don't take any interest in them as I can't stand listening to the radio. I don't like modern 'music' and all news seems bad, so why bother? I sometimes slip in a CD and that will be twenties or thirties music and maybe even a bit of wartime swing, but certainly nothing newer!

For the daily classic I have a 10 year old radio which I bought new. It has been in several cars, at the moment it is put into my Chamois. In a place beneath the dash which I created 20 years ago for another radio. When I bought the radio I made sure it could play a USB stick. There is an original fancy roof antenna which is good in picking up the usual FM radio. I did not want to cut holes in the door panels so removed the door panels, mounted the speakers on the doors, and cut away the backing boards where the speakers are. So these are invisible behind the vinyl. Did the same in the Jaguar 420.

The TR4 does not have a radio, never had one although there is a hole for an antenna on the RH front wing so it must have had one. I will never put a radio in here because I never feel the need for one, it would be useless anyway, too much noise in/outside the car.

The sound system in my 13 year old Jaguar X-type is magnificent, with a CD changer. The negative is that there is no aux or USB. I plan to get one of these cheap DAB receivers which has an aux and USB input, and FM transmitter.

Back in the days when CB radio was the thing, 'Aunty Mary' (AM) prior to FM being introduced, was illegal in the UK so various methods were used to conceal sets in cars.
I had a 1303 Beetle at the time and fixed to the dash was an 8-track player c/w with cartridge in it. Except it wasn't, the front flipped down to reveal my illicit CB radio (handle 'Crazy Horse') - a short lived craze but great fun at the time.
Very Happy

About 20 years ago when I shot this video I had installed an HMV Radiomobile 100 but I kept skinning my knuckles on it when changing gear and with opening windscreen and sun roof there is really too much wind noise in the car to enjoy radio reception.

You can hear the radio towards the end of the video.

Anyway I took the radio out of the car not long after this video and I don't miss it. Like Riley 541 I prefer to hear the car's own sounds.

I had CB pre and post legal. "wookie 2". I had an electrical wholesale business back then and used it as one uses a cell phone today to be in contact with the shop/office.

For many years I have seldom used the car radio or CD, player. As per Riley, I like to hear what the vehicle is telling me.

In city and urban areas, I really do like to know that there is some emergency vehicle close by, so no radio. I have seen firetrucks and the like sit behind some moron who can't hear the sirens over the "boom boom"....... " what mirrors ? awww those things, wondered what they were for"

On the long trans-continent interstates, then it can be sing along time, not something for those with any musical appreciation.

By heaven! That takes me back to the early 1980s.

There was a CB enthusiast, nay CB obsessed chap living locally and he had two unlawful AM "rigs", one in his ex army Land Rover and a static rig at home with a concealed antennae.
The home one also had a "burner" and when the atmospherics were "right" he could talk to people as far away as Israel and Canada.

He was never caught.

No prizes for guessing what his favourite film was!

I cannot hear a radio in the Escort above 35mph due to induction/exhaust roar, so I took the radio out. (I can still hear SWMBO at 70 though) Crying or Very sad

I have got a radio, original Motorola, and a separate CD player but by far the favourite sound is listening to the V8 as you pass under bridges, along walls etc. So I prefer the windows down and the V8 beat.
